BERLIN — The bones of Adolf Hitler's deputy, Rudolf Hess, have been removed from their grave in a small Bavarian town that had become a pilgrimage site for neo-Nazis.
Before dawn Wednesday, workers exhumed Hess's bones from the grave in the Wunsiedel cemetery, then cremated the remains and scattered them secretly in a lake, whose name and location are not being divulged, cemetery administrator Andreas Fabel told The Associated Press.

That Rudolf Hess was a bad guy is indisputable. But there were a lot of other Nazis and Wehrmacht officers who did a lot worse and got off with just a few years in prison. Hess defected to Britain in 1940 and was out of the loop when many of Hitler’s atrocities went down. Hess was sentenced to life imprisonment at Spandau Prison in Berlin. IMHO, the punishment did not fit the crime in Hess’ situation.
Much more recently, I don’t recall hearing of any of the Stassi who murdered a number of their fellow Germans being convicted of any crimes.
the article says that the lease on the burial plot is up - wow - I thought those were supposed to be “eternal resting places”... I had no idea you could lease a plot...Europe is one weird place.
Interesting story. Maybe they hoped by cremating him Hess would burn in hell more quickly.

There was something else at work in Hess’s case. Rumors abound. Whatever the secret was, it will probably remain as secret at the fate of the two princes in the Tower of London.

I don’t think Hess defected. He had a crazy idea he could talk the British into some kind of cease fire or truce.
I think Hitler sent him.
That may have been his intention, but there was no way that the Brits would have any of his hare-brained scheme and let him go back to the Reich. We will have WW2 as a subject for discussion for many years into the future.
I would have had his ashes scattered in international waters instead of an unnamed lake like what happened to Adolf Eichmann and what we did with Bin Laden even though OBL wasn’t cremated. But at least OBL is nos considered fish poo ! LOL

It is simply another indication that the German government does not trust its own people. Germany is not a free country - no matter what German politicians do or say. If a democracy in unable to stand a funny demonstration of a few complete imbecile idiots every year, it is simply a mountain of bullshi*.
BTW - it is a quite funny irony that they turned this crazy neonazi idol into a Holocaust victim (if you take the meaning of the word “Holocaust”). The funniest irony is that the burning of Hess bones was espechially triggered by the “Evangelische Kirche” (German Lutheran Church). In nazi times the same church tried to find the crazy proof that Jesus was an aryan. Today its leadership consists primarily of feminists, perverts and some homosexual peaceniks. Jesus is surely not a aryan anymore to them, but today some of them might ask themselves if he was homosexual.
Germany is somewhat a crazy country. :(
