Sheriff's Deputy Kills Former NFL Player Outside a Convenience Store

On Sunday a Kern County, California, sheriff's deputy shot and killed David Lee "Deacon" Turner, a 56-year-old former running back for the Cincinnati Bengals, outside a convenience store in Bakersfield. Police questioned Turner, who was coming out of the store with his 19-year-old son, while investigating reports of teenagers asking adults to buy them alcohol and cigarettes. The Kern County Sheriff's Office says Deputy Wesley Kraft fired twice at Turner after the former football player hit Deputy Aaron Nadal over the head with a bag containing two 24-ounce cans of beer. Turner's son offered a strikingly different account:

Turner's son was too shaken to speak with Eyewitness News on Sunday, but he told his sister what he witnessed.

"They asked my dad if he was the person buying alcohol for underage youth," Jerrica Cor-Dova said.

Have been for years... You see a lot of them and the 24 oz. bottles in premium and micro brews.

If the surveillance video mysteriously disappears, we know what happened.

I got a 25.4 oz can of Fosters (Australian for “beeah”) in the fridge right now.

I don't think this needs to be a case where we hope the police were right in their actions. Let the evidence lead us to the truth. Either the former NFL player was involved, or he was not. If he was not, then the actions of the responding officers will need to be judged.

Will the video become unreadable?

When I was in the c store it was common for kids to come in, try to buy beer, get refused and leave. A few minutes later one of the local winos would come in, go to the cooler then come to the counter with a 6 pack of the beer the kids wanted and a bottle of rotgut.

I would tell the wino that if he bought the beer I was going to follow him out the door and call the cops if I found any kids waiting for him.

A lot of otherwise law abiding people don't have a problem buying beer for kids, so it isn't just the winos, some kids will ask anyone they see.

24 oz cans are called “tall boys” and have been around for decades.

"I know that there is a video recording, so we are relying heavily on the video recording from Fastrip," Cor-Dova said.

Wonder if it will be sent to the same place for "analysis" as the LVPD sent the Costco recording.

Those are known as "oil cans" and I have an open one right in front of me at the moment.

Tall boys were once the 16oz. Inflation, I guess.

I believe the kid before I believe the cops. The kid's story doesn't sound made up, to me; and I highly doubt that the adult was going about the business of bashing a cop in the head with a bag of beer bottles.

I thought it could be “Pacman” Jones. What a turd. Can’t believe the Titans took him. But then I can’t believe the Titans take any of their last 5 years of draft players.

Glad I didn’t buy PSL seats when they moved here.

I won’t prejudge this incident, but I do live here and I can tell you this case has the potential to really get the local blacks worked into a frenzy.

The Kern County cops have quite a few officer involved shootings. They have also been pretty good at investigating them. They have judged a few to be unjustified.
