Attorney General Eric Holder at the Mexico/United States Arms Trafficking Conference in CUERNAVACA, MEXICO Thursday, April 2, 2009

Last week, our administration launched a major new effort to break the backs of the cartels. My department is committing 100 new ATF personnel to the Southwest border in the next 100 days to supplement our ongoing Project Gunrunner, DEA is adding 16 new positions on the border, as well as mobile enforcement teams, and the FBI is creating a new intelligence group focusing on kidnapping and extortion. DHS is making similar commitments, as Secretary Napolitano will detail.

But as today’s conference has emphasized, the problem of arms trafficking will not be stopped at the border alone. Rather, as our experts emphasized, this is a problem that must be met as part of a comprehensive attack against the cartels – an attack in depth, on both sides of the border, that focuses on the leadership and assets of the cartel...[2]

The national MSM, every local news paper, and every local television station should have coverage on this story. This needs to be brought to a head, and then lanced.

Impeachment hearings must be started concerning Holder since he lied. This should lead to impeachment of King Obama.

They would if Republicans were to blame.

Is this real or not?

As a long-time FReeper, I’m getting a bit tired of all the satire that gets posted...

I, like many here, simply don’t have the time to chase down every freakin article to find out if it’s authentic.

BTW, if it is real, thanks for sharing. Important information.

He’ll probably get out of it by saying something like, “I knew about Project Gunrunner but not Fast and Furious, and I did not know the details of the operation.”

Thanks.

Sounds like Zero knew. Did the acting ATF director change when Obama got elected?

If so, I find it hard to believe he would have taken on an initiative like this without his bosses approval.

Real. Not a smoking gun (”Operation Gunrunner” was a legitimate Bush program), but the implications of some comments stink.

From The Christian Science Monitor April 2, 2009.

US targets gun flows into Mexico in bid to stem drug violence
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Attorney General Eric Holder visit Mexico Thursday to meet with their counterparts
:

During the visit in Mexico, officials are also expected to discuss ways to target "straw purchasers," those who buy guns for smugglers, as well as continuing cooperation with the ATF and other agencies to trace weapons back to sellers in the US.

I think the second part of his statement is too damning to just shluff it off by denying any knowledge of it. "But as today’s conference has emphasized, the problem of arms trafficking will not be stopped at the border alone. Rather, as our experts emphasized, this is a problem that must be met as part of a comprehensive attack against the cartels – an attack in depth, on both sides of the border, that focuses on the leadership and assets of the cartel" (emphasis mine)

It’s real, it’s a transcript of a press conference in Mexico. You can see it on YouTube.

OPERATION GUNRUNNER AND OPERATION FAST AND FURIOUS WERE TWO SEPERATE PROGRAMS THAT THEY WANT YOU TO THINK IS ONE PROGRAM.

Curiously, Melson was appointed acting ATF chief in April 2009.

“However, we need to be very careful how we write about this story. Both Ross and Hollingsworth, as well as Buck Sexton as Glenn Beck’s site The Blaze, conflate Project Gunrunner with Operation Fast and Furious. The terms are not interchangeable. So far as I can tell, Attorney General Holder did not profess ignorance about Project Gunrunner, as Sexton alleges. He professed ignorance about Operation Fast and Furious. That’s a critical difference that, at this point, leaves him off the hook.”
