JUBA, South Sudan — South Sudan became the world's newest nation early Saturday, officially breaking away from Sudan after two civil wars over five decades that cost the lives of at least 2 million people.

Residents of the new nation — the Republic of South Sudan — danced in the streets, banged on jerry cans and chanted the name of the world's newest president, Salva Kiir.

South Sudan earned independence at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, the culmination of a January independence vote guaranteed in a 2005 peace deal that ended the most recent north-south war.

Saturday's early morning celebrations were joyous for the freedom gained but tinged with the memories of family members lost.

Chol Allen, a 32-year-old minister, escaped Sudan in 2003 and eventually settled in Memphis, Tennessee. He returned to Juba two months ago for the midnight party, though he plans to go back to the U.S.

"I came here for this moment," he said. "We were all born into war. All of us," he said while pointing at a crowded pick-up truck of youngsters. "This generation will see the hope of the newborn nation."

Abdule Taban wore a wide smile during the night's street party, but the 25-year-old was also reflective.

“Residents of the new nation — the Republic of South Sudan — danced in the streets, banged on jerry cans and chanted the name of the world’s newest president, Salva Kiir.”

Who then suspended the constitution, outlawed opposition parties, and declared himself president for life.

It’s Africa, people! Only (maybe) one country on the whole continent avoided this scenario.

South Sudanese gets their independence after 25 bloody years of war against the Muslim butchers and they get kicked off Front Page, but Elliot Spitzer losing his show, which affects exactly two viewers, is Breaking News?

Just Damn.

They existed before and are becoming independent again. The muslim north has always tried to kill off the Christians in the South.

Well, it’s a great day for them. We should all celebrate the freedom of our fellow Christians and wish the best for them in the future.

Well it isn’t a RAT Rebellion devoted to preserving slavery.
So it is about ten steps above 1861

"The lyrics seem to depict an inflated sense of importance."

They have REAL martyrs, who are worthy of this aspirational language, as is God. Their national anthem:

South Sudan Oyee!

Oh God!
We praise and glorify you
For your grace upon Kush,
The land of great warriors
And origin of the world’s civilization.

Oh Kush!
Arise, shine, raise your flag with the guiding star
And sing songs of freedom with joy,
For peace, liberty and justice
Shall forever be again.

Oh black warriors!
Stand in silence and respect,
Saluting millions of martyrs whose
Blood cemented our national foundation.
We vow to protect our nation.

Oh Eden!
Land of milk and honey and hardworking people,
Uphold us united in peace and harmony.
The Nile, valleys, forests and mountains
Shall be our sources of joy and pride

Oh lord, bless South Sudan!

Thanks for the link.

Absolutely a great day. They begin as one of the poorest nations on earth. Nonetheless, Dinka, Nuer, Equatorian, they have all survived. Now they must live together, and they have the human raw material to succeed. Moreso than Ethiopia or Eritrea, even moreso than Uganda and Kenya. They will do so despite having endured so many atrocities including one of the most terrible massacres in human history when the Arabs burned down the Rumbek school and slaughtered the cream of South Sudan’s educated elite. While the USA will piss billions of dollars down the Egyptian rathole, the few thousand spent in South Sudan will go to better effect.

South Sudan is Christian.

North Sudan is Moslem.

Guess who will get the biggest check?
