TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Toshiba Corp. has lobbied a senior U.S. government official to realize an international nuclear fuel supply scheme that includes the construction of a nuclear waste repository in Mongolia, according to a copy of a letter by Toshiba's president obtained by Kyodo News on Friday.

Norio Sasaki, president of the Japanese electronics giant which has U.S. Westinghouse Electric Co. as a subsidiary, sent the letter dated May 12, 2011, to Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman.

The governments of Japan, the United States and Mongolia have already been discussing the scheme, called Comprehensive Fuel Supply, informally, according to an internal Japanese government document dated February 2011, obtained by Kyodo News.

The basic idea of the scheme is to supply countries wishing to introduce nuclear energy with reactors made by U.S., Japanese and other major companies that would use nuclear fuel produced in Mongolia, with the spent fuel returned to the country.

Mongolia is known to hold huge reserves of uranium.

Why don’t they lobby their own government then we can ship OUR waste there instead of lobbying the USA so Japan can dispose of their nuclear waste? Stupid question, I know.

Perhaps we can outsource storage of the weapons as well. I’m sure the chinese can do that cheaper.

Then when they have he technology to refine the waste they will have tons of the stuff.

Oh they already have the ability to refine whatever they want. They were only missing the delivery systems, which Clinton sold them.

It is stupid. The reason is that spent fuel rods contain plutonium. A reprocessing facility can reclaim that plutonium. Toshiba’s president also conveniently ignores the spent fuel rods we bought off the Russians and stored at INEL in Idaho, just to make sure the stuff didn’t get diverted to terrorists. FWIW, Westinghouse used to manage INEL.

How much you wanna bet Obama gets a donation in some manner for his campaign from?

nuclear fuel produced in Mongolia, with the spent fuel returned to the country.

You know those empty shipping containers from China? We should place them in Wal-mart parking lots for people to throw their broken trash in, and ship it back to where it came from.

I will never buy a Toshiba product.
During the Cold War, they sold to the Russkies a giant multi-axial lathe that enabled them to produce submarine props that were an order of magnitude quieter that they were previously able to make.

It might be cheaper to move the repository to Japan, and move Japan to Mongolia. The Japanese certainly have an excellent start on a long-term repository at Fukushima....

Actually if you are going to store radioactive waste for a hundred thousand years, Mongolia is a pretty good choice. Nobody wants to be there to begin with, and the country is not really known for its floods and earthquakes.
