Thanks.
Fish hatcheries serve many good purposes and it is good that they are self-funded .
Hunting licenses do much of them same—as we both know.
Fishing licenses and permits sold by states go to operate state agencies. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service operates the federal hatcheries, and the excise taxes (federal) on fishing equipment is used to operate these. States do have some hatcheries they operate too, with the money from permits and licenses.
Also the USFWS appropriate the hunting/fishing equipment tax money back to state wildlife agencies, with amounts based on the number of license holders in the state.
Unlike hikers, rock climbers, wildlife viewers, etc., hunters and anglers finance their own activities. They are true conservationists. The $$$ from these excise taxes also go towards purchasing, and managing wildlife refuges, etc.
I would LOVE to see the look on people’s faces when they see you sail by reeling in a good fish (LOL). BTW, you might want to check out www.theoutdoorwire.com, and www.theshootingwire.com. Jim Shepherd is providing awesome coverage of the gunwalker case.
Thanks Flycatcher. Take away the fish and the money the anglers spend and there won’t be any funds to finance boat launches, mitigation stocking, research into fish diseases, lots of good things.
Thanks for the ping. Good article and hopefully those hatcheries will remain open to raise fish with sportsman dollars being used as they’re designated to be used by law.
It’s sad but true that many don’t realize federal excise tax on fishing and hunting gear go to maintain and improve fish and wildlife in our nation.
As you’ve pointed out fishermen and hunters spend a lot of money across the nation which in turn allows for the employment of many people.
Money being spent now by many animal loving people who just go to view and photograph wildlife create jobs also but those people don’t pay that excise tax to support wildlife like fishermen and hunters do. So in effect sportsmen are footing the bill for many others to enjoy wildlife.
Thanks, I’ll check out both sites.
Good info too, Thanks.
Where do you sail? In the ocean or lakes?
When I was in college I dated a guy with a sailboat. It was a lot of fun.
The boat, that is.
Waaaaaaaaa! That’s fine. Whatever gets them closer to the part about laying off the PhD. biologists. Cut most of the government spending to avoid default or proceed to it. The days of the worthless, left/liberal busybodies are numbered either way.
I wasn't aware that the president's buget had gotten approved by Congress. When did that happen?
Besides, how does your budget get cut $6 billion while being increased $48 billion?
In Stuart, Florida both inshore and offshore.
Offshore we catch Dolphin cobia, sharks, wahoo etc. and inshore everything from snook, blue fish, Jacks, and this year I caught a 3 foot long Tarpon while sailing in Stuart bay.
That brought out some cheers and a smile on me I couldn’t shake for a week.
Unless I plan on eating it I release most everything.
If the USFWS spent less time looking for critters to call endangered to shut down oil drilling and other productive pursuits, there’d be plenty of money for the fish...
Yet I suspect it still goes into the general slush fund. Which makes it all one big accounting fraud.
>>Privatize them.<<
I was wondering how long I would have to read before I saw the answer I had in mind. I’ll jump at the chance to put a couple of hundred thousand into a business that returns 25 to one. Heck, give me five to one and I’m your man.
