Billionaire George Soros Trying To Stack the Courts, Critics Say
Fox News.com ^ | June 27, 2011 | Maxim Lott

Billionaire George Soros spends tens of millions each year supporting a range of liberal social and political causes, from drug legalization to immigration reform to gay marriage to abolishing the death penalty.

But a less well-known Soros priority -- replacing elections for judges with selection-by-committee -- now has critics accusing him of trying to stack the courts.

Most non-federal judges around the country are selected by voters in elections. But some states use a process called “merit selection” in which a committee – often made up of lawyers – appoints judges to the bench instead.

Soros has spent several million dollars in the past decade in an attempt to get more states to scrap elections and adopt the merit method. Supporters say it would allow judges to focus on interpreting the law rather than on raising campaign funds and winning elections.

“Merit selection would end the money race and get judges out of the fundraising business,” Lynn Marks, executive director of Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts -- a group that has received money from Soros’ Open Society Institute -- told FoxNews.com.

But critics say that if judges are picked by committee -- often, a committee of lawyers -- that will give left-wing judges the upper hand.

“The left can’t get their agenda through the legislatures anymore … so they think they can get their agenda through by taking over the courts,” attorney Colleen Pero, author of a new report titled "Hijacking Justice," told FoxNews.com.

Well sounds like to me he’s just flushing money down the crapper. In most states it would take a constitutional amendment and I can’t see a majority willingly giving up their right to vote just so a panel of lawyers can choose their justices. Of course a majority voted for Obama in 2008, so what the heck do I know, some would probably be willing to let the same panel of lawyers pick all the elected offices from he president on down.

What opportunity did Bush have to “get” him? So far as I know the only such opportunity came when the French nailed him for insider trading, and those appeals are still dragging through French courts.

I think the correct term for the courts being proposed (and in some cases implemented?) by this is “Star Chamber”.

I don’t mind getting rid of elected judges, so long as the methodology in how they make it to the bench mimics how judicial appointments happen at the Federal level (nominated by the executive, confirmed by the legislature). I can’t believe that anyone would take the concept of having un-elected lawyers choose judges seriously ... let alone actually allow such a scheme to go into practice.

Agree! Wish he’d also had more priority on voter fraud. But in W’s defence, he did have a lot on his plate.

With all the things soros is doing to overthrow the United States, you don’t think he has a war room or two with everything laid out, accounts with all the traitors on his payroll, his plans and treachory? His properties should have been raided a long time ago. The FBI should have been investigating him the past ten years, the CIA should have been looking into his international dealings as well. This guy is all of James Bonds bad guys rolled up in one! And for real!

He is old, and soon to be gone from this world. Born August 12, 1930 (age 80). Soon to be 81, and nobody lives forever, no matter how much money they have. The lord will then judge.
