Skip to comments.NPR host: ‘The Taliban has never been an enemy of the United States’ (Huh???)

So what if the pre-2002 Taliban government of Afghanistan harbored terrorists that were responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. And never mind if more recently the Taliban reacted to the death of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden with a pair of suicide bombers theyre not really our enemies.
Thats the takeaway from public radio host John Hockenberry, whose show The Takeaway appears on NPR stations all over the country.
In an interview with Christine Fair, assistant professor at the Center for Peace and Security Studies at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., Hockenberry challenged the notion of the Taliban being an enemy of the United States and declared that the idea it could again make Afghanistan a haven for terrorists an absurdity.
I guess, Christine Fair, Im wondering why this is even a debate, Hockenberry said. The Taliban has never been an enemy of the United States. They dont love us in Afghanistan, but theyre not sending planes over to New York or to the Pentagon and it seems to me much more broadly that the debate needs to happen is what is the sort of multi-state strategy for dealing with rogue nations of all kinds. Yemen is about to fall apart. Youve got Somalia problems. The idea that terrorists just go to Afghanistan and launch weapons at the United States it seems in 2011 is an absurdity.
Fair agreed with Hockenberrys assertion and questioned why there is such a U.S. military presence in Afghanistan.
Well, of course you know Im in violent agreement with you, she said. I dont get this strategy and I havent gotten this strategy for some time. Its clear that having 130,000 troops in Afghanistan has actually made things worse than where we were even five years ago.
Eliminate the waste of taxpayer’s money that is NPR.
Why do we keep giving propaganda crap face time?
Oy....and there are twits who agree with this statement.
And where in the Holy Hell are the warriors that the Tea Party sent to congress last November . . . it's 6 months now and nothing has happened.
Didn't we kinda' sorta' in a way win big in November??????????? What the hell has happened?
Pay your taxes.
This guy needs a raise. :)
Propaganda has to have an element of believability to it so that people will buy it. This is so far removed from sensible that it couldn’t hope to be propaganda.
It’s straight out of Orwell and the Ministry of truth. A total rewriting of the facts to fit the agenda. We have always been at war with East Asia.
Kidding aside, everyone needs to read or reread 1984. We really are living it. No joke.
Boy, ain’t that the truth. I wouldn’t be in the same room with that nasty illegal alien much less play golf with him.
And this Boner Clown continues to weep the republican party into obscurity while NPR and Planned Predators continues to laugh at us. We could have cut their funding MONTHS AGO, but this SOH clown just can’t get around to it.
I think they’re trying to make some distinction between the Taliban and al Qaeda, but they’re doing it as if they can’t be fired for the quality of their reporting or the wrongness of their views, and as if they don’t actually have to have enough listeners to stay in business.
You guys are forgetting the Liberal mantra:
“Fire cannot melt steel!”
And Oprah Winfrey has never been fat and Asians make good drivers.
But..their opinion cannnot be discounted...NPR has some expertise in the field of “enemies of the United States”.
If anyone has the original I wish they would put it on the net if possible
because I think they have rewritten the original which was really scary and I’m with you. We are seeing this book/movie becoming a reality.
You can’t cure stupid.
I see. The Taliban is an oppressed minority, and the USA is the oppressor. Marxists see the entire world this way.
“If anyone has the original I wish they would put it on the net if possible”
There is an etext version, google is your pal.
Google IS NOT my pal, sorry.
This what happens when cousins marry....
