One could make that argument regarding ethnicity, but I am not interested in ethnicity. I am interested in culture.

Culturally, Mexicans are not like me. They tolerate a lot of social ills as part and parcel of daily life in Mexico, like graft and corruption. Culturally, Mexicans do not disdain rape at the same level as Americans do; instead they regard it as an aspect of "machismo".

I know I have made overarching statements that may not hold true in all cases, but this has been my experience of living among them for the last 42 years.

Do we want to import this? I say no, and it's the same as if low class white trash wanted into my country. I don't want them either. It has nothing to do with ethnicity. It has everything to do with culture.

I think you've answered your question. Wealth can only insulate people so much from the symptoms of a dysfunctional society.

One can only enjoy life so much -- even while lounging poolside behind the protection of CCTV cameras and razor wire -- when the bulk of your countrymen are illiterate rooster-fight enthusiasts.

American oligarchs will learn this lesson soon enough, but not as quickly or as painfully as normal Americans.
