I’d rather have THESE kind of Mexicans than the kind we usually get.
Still...I want ALL immigrants to desire to be American...not this halfway sh*t.
The best thing about Austin is the unwashed liberal masses have to live in the center of a Republican led government! Don’t you know it drives them batty to have to see and hear about the Republican super majority every single day? I smile a lot thinking about that.
So, instead of seeing the advantages of having productive, imaginative, educated people come to this country and contributing to it materially, all you see is foreigners? Stay under your rock.
I agree, but they either need to:
1. Work towards English proficiency (which if they’re wealthy Mexicans they probably have) and BECOME AMERICANS by CITIZENSHIP and IN THEIR HEARTS...
or
2. Stick to business, and butt out of our culture and public debate.
I understand why poor Mexicans want to get out...but not sure why wealthy ones do. They have it made down there in their gated havens.
“If they come here and build businesses, employ people and pay taxes (i.e. they come legally) I am all for it. Big difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration.”
I agree completely. It’s a win-win. I bet they are well educated, fluent in English, and assimilate almost immediately, too.
They are being kidnapped for tidy ransom sums.
The targeted kidnappings and extortion don’t help you stay rich, which is what is required to stay safe(r). And then the violence just keeps climbing.
we are north american scum
we are north american
Obama tells us so..
No. What I see is a country full up of humans already.
I see folks coming form a non-Western, non-European society that have little in common culturally with my, and your, fellow Americans.
I see a mentality in this article and from some fellow Americans that implies that the most important thing in life is money, and the fact that these folks have some mitigates the cultural dilution that occurs every time we accept Mexicans into our country.
I see a lack of critical thought on your part regarding this issue.
I come about these opinions not from being "under a rock", but rather from years of first hand experience, most of it negative, even with wealthy Mexicans. Some of this experience was gained in the very same town you work in and the very same school district that employs you and even the very same school you worked at, when I served as a long-term substitute at SFA.
I agree that we’re filling up with people. They’re not going to stop coming. Your comment about Mexicans coming from a non-European, non-Western society is just ridiculous. I see a lack of critical thought on your part. The wealthy Mexicans come from moneyed backgrounds frequently rooted in Spanish ancestry.
You did not learn about wealthy Mexicans at the school where we worked. The Mexicans you did learn about were poor Mexicans (not Chicanos, mind you) who worked hard and for low pay. They wanted better lives for their kids. Their kids were usually respectful of the teacher because that is a part of Mexican culture. When I called their homes, the parents addressed me as “maestra” with a respect that I didn’t get from many parents of other cultures.
Clearly, you and I have very different experiences, although we worked at the same place at the same time.
The movie Man on Fire explains why they are moving up here.
I agree with your assessment. There are quite a number of businesses here that "cater" to the illegal population. I want to see what happens if the sanctuary city business bill gets signed.
No, I don't think may retirees are going to Mexico to live.
Happening in Houston and other cities in Texas I’d guess. For good or bad it seems those with money are attempting to flee Mexico.

Mexico drug violence spurs home sales in Houston area .
HOUSTON The violence in Mexico is driving many families to look for homes in the Houston area due to its proximity to major airports and its distance from the border violence, according to a Houston Realtor.
Lately, business has been booming for Mariana Saldaña, president of Uptown Real Estate Group, Inc. She says she sells at least one property a week to Mexican nationals who want a second home in the Houston area.
"The wealthy Mexicans come from moneyed backgrounds frequently rooted in Spanish ancestry..."
I am not concerned with ancestry. I am concerned with culture. Their culture is different than mine. They are more tolerant than I in the areas of graft, corruption, rape, and general disrespect for the law. They also accept racism. Did I say "accept"? I meant embrace. Their culture is very racist, but you'll give them a pass because they have lots of money, I guess.
Also, the fact that they have Spanish ancestry has no bearing on the argument, unless you're being racist and saying pointing out their difference from the indios and mestizos. If you ask a wealthy Mexican about his Castillian ancestry, of course he will be very proud of it, because it delineates him from the brown masses that he holds in such low regard.
You say:
"Theyre not going to stop coming..."
They will continue to come as long as we lack the will to enforce our borders. It has little to do with them; it is a failure on OUR part.
And you're correct that I did not come about my disdain for wealthy Mescians at your school. I came about my disdain for them as a young man who delivered pizza to a very wealthy area. The wealthy Mexicans there treated me like poop simply because I was serving them; in their mind I was peon requiring little respect (and no tip, BTW) because of their station in life. This mentality directly refutes a fundamental tenet of American culture, that all men are equal. Your sainted wealthy Mexicans would import the very same racist, class structure that our founding Fathers refuted. I refute it too.
"Their kids were usually respectful of the teacher because that is a part of Mexican culture...."
We must have had different students! I did get death threats though.
*In 20 years of teaching (and I'm know as a strict teacher), not once have I been threatened in any way. I've taught white, black, Mexican, Chicano, Asian-Indian, Pakistani. I've testified in court. I've been responsible for students being sent to both on- and off-campus suspension. I've called parents, and I've been yelled at by parents in conferences. Not once in those 20 years have I ever experienced physical violence or been threatened with it. I've never feared for my safety.
Question: I made it 20 years without being threatened, but you, having substituted a fraction of that time, received "death threats." (I'll have to take your word for that. Rumors of death threats make it around the campus. I never heard any rumors of death threats.) I wonder what you did to antagonize your students.
End of communication.
It says Mexicans relocate to Texas. So why are U.S. companies relocating to Mexico ?
With luck, those businesses will be coming back to all the GOP states making pro-business their agenda.
One could argue that wealthy Mexicans, mostly largely white descendants of Spaniards...are as Western as anyone.
