The problem was the wife. Aides to Newt Gingrich have resigned from his presidential campaign in protest of what they felt was a takeover by Callista Gingrich, the candidates wife since 2000.
The euphemism offered by departing staffers was they disagreed with Gingrichs strategy for the campaign. Indeed, they did disagree. But it was a strategy a part-time campaign, in effect that Gingrichs wife favored.
Several aides, including campaign manager Rob Johnson, met with Gingrich on Thursday morning and told him of the senior staffs unanimous decision to quit. Gingrich later put out a statement saying he was staying in the race.
The last straw for the campaign staff was Gingrichs decision to go on a two-week cruise in the Mediterranean, from which he returned on Tuesday. His advisers urged him not to go and take so much time from a campaign that was already in trouble. But his wife wanted him to go and she won the argument.
As a result, the morale of the Gingrich staff fell sharply. And fundraising declined as well with Gingrich absent from the day-to-day media coverage of the campaign.
While Gingrich was away, his aides talked among themselves about the course of the campaign. They wanted him to commit to seeking the Republican nomination on a full-time basis, including time spent in personal fundraising by Gingrich himself. Gingrich balked at this. His wife wanted him to pursue the presidency at less strenuous clip.

This isn’t the first time I’ve heard that his wife has significant negatives and influence over him. I’m not surprised by today’s announcement.
I’d say the problem, as always, was Newt’s mouth.
Newt Gingrich’s staff divorced him while his campaign was on its deathbed. He got Newt Gingriched. @RexHuppke
He’s only in as a spoiler. He’s gone to the dark side. NY23 proved it. He wants to steal conservative votes by people who barely pay attention, from real conservatives, so the Establishment candidate can get in.
He must be stopped.
Campaign staffs have a way about “controlling” things ... Sarah Palin, for instance, did not get treated well by McCain’s staff.
She needs to go work for Romney next.
Looks like Newt didn’t learn from the Fred Thompson campaign strategy that just waiting for the voters to find you doesn’t really work out.
I’ve been worried about Newt ever since he changed his name to “Callista and I.”
Rush said from the beginning that he didn’t think that Gingrich was seriously pursuing the presidency, that he had some other agenda in mind, like a permanent seat on some think tank, like the Aspen Institute.
I don’t care where you’re from, that’s funny!
Now that’s some funny stuff
Evidently, according to various unnamed insiders, she gave them the STARE!
Holy smokes.
Well put! I’ve thought the same thing.
“Callista and I” = “Hey, see what a loyal family man I am (now)”
He took it way overboard. No cruise pun intended.
Lol! I’d be afraid to tell cross Mrs. Newt, too!
Just damn!
LOL! I was thinking the same thing!
It’s nice to acknowledge one’s spouse from time to time, I suppose, but seriously: what other candidate talks like that? Do ‘Callista and I’ plan to share the Oval Office?
I stole it from a guy who stole it from someone else.
He went on a two-week cruise? I never even noticed he was gone.
Actually, he probably did better than usual, since he wasn’t around to put his foot in it.
