Experts back Sarah Palin’s historical account: You betcha she was right!
The Boston Herald ^ | June 6, 2011 | Chris Cassidy

Sarah Palin yesterday insisted her claim at the Old North Church last week that Paul Revere “warned the British” during his famed 1775 ride — remarks that Democrats and the media roundly ridiculed — is actually historically accurate. And local historians are backing her up.

Palin prompted howls of partisan derision when she said on Boston’s Freedom Trail that Revere “warned the British that they weren’t going to be taking away our arms by ringing those bells and making sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be secure and we were going to be free.”

Palin insisted yesterday on Fox News Sunday she was right: “Part of his ride was to warn the British that were already there. That, hey, you’re not going to succeed. You’re not going to take American arms.”

In fact, Revere’s own account of the ride in a 1798 letter seems to back up Palin’s claim. Revere describes how after his capture by British officers, he warned them “there would be five hundred Americans there in a short time for I had alarmed the Country all the way up.”

Boston University history professor Brendan McConville said, “Basically when Paul Revere was stopped by the British, he did say to them, ‘Look, there is a mobilization going on that you’ll be confronting,’ and the British are aware as they’re marching down the countryside, they hear church bells ringing — she was right about that — and warning shots being fired. That’s accurate.”

Patrick Leehey of the Paul Revere House said Revere was probably bluffing his British captors, but reluctantly conceded that it could be construed as Revere warning the British.

“I suppose you could say that,” Leehey said. “But I don’t know if that’s really what Mrs. Palin was referring to.”

McConville said he also is not convinced that Palin’s remarks reflect scholarship.

“I would call her lucky in her comments,” McConville said.

Meanwhile, the state’s Democratic Party held a thin blue line on the issue, insisting on mocking Palin despite a brief historical review of the matter. State party chairman John Walsh wise-cracked that the region welcomes all tourists, even those with “an alternative view of history.”

“If you believe he was riding through the countryside sending text messages and Tweets to the British, still come to Boston,” he said. “There are a lot of things to do and see.”

But Cornell law professor William Jacobson, who asserted last week that Palin was correct, linking to Revere quotes on his conservative blog Legalinsurrection.com, said Palin’s critics are the ones in need of a history lesson. “It seems to be a historical fact that this happened,” he said. “A lot of the criticism is unfair and made by people who are themselves ignorant of history.”

My one-time Ninjutsu teacher, present brother-in-law, could throw a new student down for hours, and that would be how long it took for them to admit that he knows something. Until then, they’d be sure that they tripped, it was “luck,” “something strange happened,” etc.

Here's another couple examples of persistent delusion:

“I would call her lucky in her comments,” McConville said.

It was not national news worthy

It was as news worthy as a fumbled toast to the Queen, 57 States, or how to spell potatoe.

Go sell stupid someplace else.

No - a random - CORRECT - comment in a harried situation is not equal to flubbing a prepared toast to the Queen in front of the whole world. Nice try at the equavalency game, though.

Unless you think my kid’s baseball game is the World Series.

Ummm - no.

Because the usual tourist banter does not include Revere’s capture - and his effectively telling his captors to screw off.

Look - the keeper of the Revere House or whatever - still doesn’t understand what he has got wrong.

This was “she read a book before the trip, and it was in the book - and she tangled it up”.

The “usual tourist banter” is what the LSM expected from her -

If you ever want to read a great book -
http://www.amazon.com/Paul-Reveres-David-Hackett-Fischer/dp/0195098315

Is an awesome book. And she sounded EXACTLY like she had read it - the emphasis on the British coming to take the weapons, Revere “warning” them - etc. If you read this book - you will understand exactly where she was coming from.

I’m from Boston - been to Lexington Green on April 19th multiple times. Been to nearly every historical site there 3X. her comments were NOT based on the usual banter. The book reads like a Die Hard movie.

One reason I say this - the part where Revere is caught - just sticks in your head. It is just so awesome - some of the backstory - he was actually WANTED by the Brits - he was not just some unknown dude. So here he is - riding around the coutryside, raising the alarm - the Brit Scouts catch him - and ask “Who are you” and he says “Paul Revere” - like the ONE guy they were trying to catch. (I forget - but his charge would have been close to treason) - So - a little banter, they put a gun to his head, blah blah, - THEN he says “Better let me go - because my boys are coming!” - and they let him go!

But - no - I don’t get a commission on book sales.

I wasn’t so much referring to the content as the presentation.

The presentation was terrible - agreed. And I bet - she doesn’t get caught like that again.

In the video it looks like she was doing like 3 things at once.

You shoul dget the book - it is one of my al ltime favorites. Check out the ratings on Amazon.

“Since most of the last 3 generations has never learned our history, it makes sense they don’t know it.”

How right you are and it scares me! I have talked to some of the recent graduates of our local university (which is supposed to be quite respectable) who MAJORED in history and they don’t seem to know enough to gain ADMITTANCE to a public high school of the nineteen fifties era in South Carolina, don’t even talk about graduating.
