Advocates for Oregon gun rights sustained a setback when the state Senate Judiciary Committee amended a House-passed bill with a so-called “poison pill.”
Three Democrats on the committee last week changed HB 2797 by adding provisions opposed by the main backers of the original, which was intended to clarify how people such as ranchers or hunters can legally carry handguns on motorcycles, ATVs or snowmobiles. It had passed the House 58-0.
The two Republicans on the Senate panel, Doug Whitsett of Klamath Falls and Jeff Kruse of Roseburg, objected to the changes and served notice they may file a minority report when the bill gets to the Senate floor.
They were outvoted by Democrats Floyd Prozanski of Eugene, the panel’s chair, and Jackie Dingfelder of Portland and Suzanne Bonamici of Beaverton.
Spokesmen for the National Rifle Association and the Oregon Firearms Federation spoke against the amendments. A Portland representative of Ceasefire Oregon supported them.
As amended the bill includes a provision sought by gun groups and already passed by the House: Keeping the names of concealed handgun license holders and applicants confidential.
But the new version also would make it a class C felony for anyone, including license holders, to have a firearm on school grounds and college campuses.
The amendments also make it impossible for people convicted of certain “person felonies” to regain the right to buy a gun.
Rep. Kim Thatcher, R-Keizer, said the additions would kill the bill in the House.

This is why the second amendment should be taken more seriously, and not left in the hands of legislatures.
We need to start treating the Right to Vote EXACTLY like they treat RKBA. We can start by demanding a 4473 style form and NICS check every time a person votes.
If they don’t support it, they support voter fraud. It’s that simple. If it’s good enough for RKBA, it’s good enough for voting.

One often gets the impression - whether justified or not - that the politics of Oregon are somewhere to the left of the politics of Beijing.
This vote took place last Thursday. The engrossed bill should have been available to view Friday morning. It’s still not available. Prozanski is doing everything possible to kill all gun bills. Two gun bills are up for a hearing this Wednesday morning at 8:30:
HB 2787 A - - Prohibits public body from releasing information that identifies holder of or applicant for concealed handgun license.
HB 2792 A - - Provides nonresidents who are authorized to carry concealed handgun in another state with protections provided to persons with Oregon concealed handgun license.
Off-topic, but I agree with that. Since we are off-topic, I think there needs to be a chain of custody for every ballot box or voting mechanism out there, and in the case of fraud or loss of ballots, those on the chain of custody could be prosecuted for the malfeasance.
Prozanski is obviously an anti-civil rights radical. The decent people of Oregon should flood the newspapers with letters pointing this out and pointing out that he is trying to kill civil rights legislation.
Also point out that the nation’s oldest civil rights organization backs these bills. The NRA is the nation’s oldest civil rights organization.
Notice how the people from metro areas vote against guns while people in more rural vote for. This committee lacks balanced representation.
It really isn’t off topic if you think about it. The anti’s love to restrict and make exercising RKBA very difficult. They won’t like it when the tables are turned on them. Plus, such a move would really hamper voter fraud and the Dems overall.

What’s a, “4473 style form?”
Form 4473 is the form used to perform a NICS (National Instant Check System) background check by FFL’s for individuals to purchase a firearm. Each time a firearm is purchased, the buyer must fill out a 4473 and the dealer calls in to FBI or state police (depending on the state) and the individual is checked to see if they are ineligible to own a firearm. If the person is ineligible, the transaction is denied and the gun may not be transfered. If approved, the buyer may take the gun.
For voting, it would work much the same way. The voter would submit a 4473 style form with drivers license information and a NICS style instant check would be done. If the voter is ineligible, they may not vote. This would include voting more than once, outstanding warrants, criminal history that would prevent voting, citizenship status, etc. If the voter is approved, they then would receive the ballot and do the normal voting process.
Needless to say, voter fraud would be cut dramatically. Absentee voting would require the voter to do the background check at the time he or she would pick up the ballot.
Oh! I just called ‘em a, “Backfround check.” Thought it was something to do with applying for a class 3 FFL.
I was doing a bunch of running around town last week asking all of the gun shops information about class 3’s and silencers. VERY interesting information.

Here’s the liberal amendment to ban guns:
It makes a lot of sense. After all, we require a background check to buy a gun. Voting is much more dangerous and less Constitutionally protected than buying a gun. Therefore we should require background checks before voting.
