Welcome distinguished faculty, honored guests, and bankrupt parents. And above all, welcome to you - the eager and unemployable graduates of the Class of 2011.
Today represents the culmination of a long safari through the murky thickets of this impenetrable rain forest we call "higher education." Just a few years ago you arrived for your freshman orientation, full of wide-eyed anticipation and existential dread, wondering if this place would eat you alive. Soon though - through luck, pluck, and enormous amounts of mind altering substances - you adapted to your new surroundings.
I'm temporarily handling the Iowahawk ping list while dighton is away.
Please let me know if you want to be added to or removed from the list.
Please ping me to Iowahawk articles. Thanks. :)
I recently spent some time with some new and recent college grads in a corporate training seminar. They dressed like slobs, spent class time on their iphones, and were generally illiterate.
Too bad I wasn’t there. I’m mid 20s, look 16 years old, and prefer business casual to business professional.
I at least would’ve wanted to be there.
Business casual would be appropriate. This was flannel shirts, t-shirts, shorts, jeans and sneakers.

I’m in a technical field. May I add no understanding of basic chemistry, physics, thermodynamics, can’t read a schematic or blueprint?
Right on the mark as usual. You never disappoint.
Sounds like they already have the entitlement mentality.

Guess I'm lucky. I'm a 60 + guy nearly ready to hang it up, (as are a bunch of my contemporaries) but the new hires who will replace us are very bright, diligent, ambitious, and from what I can observe, well behaved young people (far better behaved than I was 40 years ago).
To me, it's great to see an organization that was getting 'long in the tooth' bring in new blood. They have the opportunity to build on what I and my fellow geezers accomplished.
Maybe we have some exceptional HR department to hire these kids, but I seriously doubt that. There are still a lot of good kids out there, you just have to look for them.
Just my humble and limited observation.

I was walking towards my lab when a unwashed herd of sloppy, out of shape, grungy, unshaven kids and slutty looking girls with embarrassing amount of skin showing, all in flip flops, stumbling down the hall complete with iPod and cell phone addictions. I presumed they were HS students visiting the med school Wrong - it was the new class of freshmen medical students.
They have been watch House, ER, etc Hollywood crap. I am horrified.
I put my sheepskin to good use everyday here on FR.
It's pretty bad when the patient or the family knows the relevant medical terms and differential diagnosis better than an MD.
NO cheers, unfortunately.
Cheers!
Why did they get hired? We, at least, put our applicants through a variety of skill tests. Then they have to pass a drug test before they get hired. It weeds out a lot of them.
Where are the half-wit “blog pimp” haters on this one?
It is not Evening Star's blog, so this is not blog pimping. Evening Star posts the Iowahawk threads while Dighton is on his far-too-extended vacation. Dave Burge (Iowahawk) does occasionally post comments on FR, but he certainly does not need FR to generate blog traffic. He is regularly linked by Instapundit, Ace of Spades, Ed Driscoll, etc.

And I’m betting you didn’t even mean to make a funny ;)
Her Caption:
Actor Roddy McDowell talks about the 40th Anniversary of A Clockwork Orange. Plus, a conversation with Andrew Zimmern, host of The Travel Channels Bizarre Foods With Andrew Zimmern. And, the latest on the Casey Anthony murder trial. Tonight at 10 pm ET on HLN.
She will probably change it, but I saved a copy at Gratewire Forum that has her smiling face on it:
