New Chinese Video Game Allows Players to Shoot American Soldiers
The Blaze ^ | 5/18/11 | Jonathon M. Seidl

The largely-unspoken, and uneasy, tension between the United States and China may have just gotten a little more apparent. A new video game sponsored the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) now allows players to target and shoot American commandos.

Wired.com reports the new game, “Glorious Mission,” was developed by China’s Giant Network Technology Co. It sends “soldiers’ off to basic training and then sets them out on various missions. For the most part, it’s modeled after many American-made shooting games. But the comparisons may end at the graphics once you read this:

But there’s one key difference between the American and Chinese “shooters.” Where the bad guys in America’s Army are generic Middle Eastern or Central Asian insurgents and terrorists, the enemy in Glorious Mission is apparently the U.S. military. A TV report offers glimpses of an American-made Apache gunship crashing in flames.

China has, quite openly, been preparing for war with the U.S. for many years. Why the surprise about this?

They will only listen if they take a hit in their ‘pocket book’. So, what items are we prepared to take a hit on that says “Made in China”?

Our combat hardened military against their video game vets.

That's gonna take some creative programming.

American and Chinese soldiers are both staples of video games. You can’t really play any first person shooter without the option to play ‘good guy’ or ‘bad guy’. I was going to write a list, but let’s just go with ‘damn near every modern video game.

America’s Army is the one notable exception. No matter what, you appear to yourself as Army, and your opponent appears as an insurgent.

Back in 2009 I was in Toronto’s Chinatown, and strolled past a bootleg DVD store. They had some marquee posters for some Chinese war movies. I wondered what a Chinese war movie would be like, and then I realized who the “bad guys” were. I decided to pass.

It’s not a shock that they shoot at us in their video games. We’ve been the “bad guys” to them since 1950.

Then there's...

"Operation: Anchorage. Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. Gain access to unique armor, weapons, and exotic gadgets while you build and command interactive Strike Teams to win the battle and defeat the Chinese base.

Story: The Brotherhood Outcasts are trying to acquire advanced military technology, and the only way to open the vault containing these relics is by completing a tactical simulation only you can enter. In Operation: Anchorage you will re-live the epic Battle of Anchorage from Fallout lore. Find your way into the simulation, stripped of resources, and survive within the rules set up by the simulation’s creators. The Chinese red army is everywhere, so secure the surrounding mountain side and fight your way into the Chinese base."

There are US games in which we shoot down the Chinese bad guys...and kill the Russian soldiers. I’ve played both. to get our knickers in a twist makes us a little hypocritical.

The “Giant Network Technology Co”? Really? Maybe it’s a bad translation, but what an insipid name for a company.

Not much different than a number of first-person-shooter games made in the USA with various and sundry non-American targets to shoot. It’s a game. Do we expect the Chinese to make a game with nondescript bad guys?

I know of that change, but the point is that they were earlier going to have the “enemy” be the Chinese.
