So you don’t qualify for the Oklahoma children’s insurance or medicaid because you draw unemployment? That seems crazy doesn’t it?

Yes, it does seem crazy...yet that is exactly what I have been told by my caseworker and his supervisor.

Eligibility
Adults with children under age 18
Recipients of the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program are automatically eligible for health benefits. 

Adults with children under the age of 18 who do not receive TANF may, in some circumstances, also be eligible for medical services. The income guidelines are presented in Appendix C-1 (.pdf,  8 pp,  316 KB) Schedule X. (Resources are not considered with this group.) 

Children under age 19 and pregnant women

Children under the age of 19 and pregnant women whose family incomes meet the income guidelines in Appendix C-1 (.pdf,  8 pp,  316 KB) Schedule I.A may be eligible for medical benefits. (Resources are not considered with this group.)

If you are not on medical benefits, contact your local OKDHS Human Services Center and file an application.

You will file one of two applications, depending on the group to which you belong. (See group descriptions above.)

Applying for medical assistance for families with a member under 18, caregivers of children under the age of 19 or pregnant women. Oklahoma Health Care Authority will be accepting and processing applications for this group.Go to My SoonerCare (opens in a new window) to apply online. You can still go to an OKDHS Human Services Center. to get help applying or get an application.

Persons with disabilities, blindness or who are older than the age 65, must fill out form 08MP003 - Word (.doc, 5 pp, 168 KB) | PDF (.pdf, 4 pp, 247 KB) at the local OKDHS Human Services Center.

What if I do not qualify?

The Joint Oklahoma Information Network (JOIN) is a partnership between several Oklahoma state agencies that can help you find some of the government, non profit, and other services and programs for which you may be eligible. All you need to do is fill out a simple eligibility questionnaire or browse the Community Resource Directory for the resources that may be available in your community for your specific situation.

I’ve done all that. I believe the people in the DHS office are wrong, but they refuse to consider that option. The help you can receive if you don’t qualify is a once a month free clinic (the doctor wasn’t available this month so we saw the nurse mentioned earlier), and the clinic we went to the other day where they did a few tests and say “everything is ok”

Thank you for posting that, I appreciate the suggestions that I may have not known about.
