Michigan Police Could Search Cell Phones During Traffic Stops [what's a 'constitution'?]
Slashdot ^ | 4/19/11 | timothy

SonicSpike writes

"The Michigan State Police have a high-tech mobile forensics device that can be used to extract information from cell phones belonging to motorists stopped for minor traffic violations. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan last Wednesday demanded that state officials stop stonewalling freedom of information requests for information on the program. A US Department of Justice test of the CelleBrite UFED used by Michigan police found the device could grab all of the photos and video off of an iPhone within one-and-a-half minutes. The device works with 3000 different phone models and can even defeat password protections. 'Complete extraction of existing, hidden, and deleted phone data, including call history, text messages, contacts, images, and geotags,' a CelleBrite brochure explains regarding the device's capabilities" Popular Mechanics has a short conversation with a 4th Amendment lawyer about the practice of slurping cellphone data, too, though it's unclear if the Michigan police are actually using these devices to their full potential.

You are welcome to be a slave to an ever increasing number of devices and fads, I have better things to do with my life.

Like, ah, spending your evenings posting on an internet chat forum?

That is the mystery... I understand that conservatives have traditionally valued order. I get that. However I am convinced that an autocratic Royalist inclination has survived Jefferson and the centuries.

That's just it - conservatives DO and SHOULD value order - but a police state is not order. Order implies the rule of law, not the rule of law enforcement. True order is a necessity for liberty - but simply passing ever more onerous laws, while breaking the foundational one that supposedly directs everything else, is not order - it is chaos.

That's your choice, however, I use it for business and expect Constitutional protection.

Thanks for the laugh. P.T. Barnum loves you! LOL

You must live in a different reality than I do.

LOL, fraid not.

You are sitting here posting with "technology" that the fed can come and invade yet criticize the technolology of cell phones because they can be compromised.....by the assertion the government can access it so you won't own one.

Your whole premise is flawed, and you are trolling....or....a serf, troll, idiot.

When my back is this bad, as it is today, yes.

On better days, better activities.
Did do some shooting this afternoon, including a suppressed .45 carbine.

Spent the morning sifting through RKBA related legislation to see what survived it’s first committee deadline, and passing the information on to other activist.
Not a lot of fun, just necessary to attempt to protect freedom.

Very well said Titus...

The Police State has replaced personal accountability, personal responsibility, moral law, Natural Lawas Blackstone taught.

Jail bait calling someone a serf is something but I don’t think it’s irony. ;-)

Yes and far too often I ask Freepers alike how is it that a ruler, any ruler over us, politician, police officer, et al having unlimited power, not a despot?

I suspect the time may come when law enforcement agencies and officers will be disciplined.

Better not own or buy a gun, you get checked for being a "law abiding citizen"

Don't think you're not in a database compromising your "cell phone privacy"?

And guess what sucker, they charge you $25.00 bucks to exercise you Constitutionally, protected, God Given right to self defense

Troll

Hmmm, the appropriate response would probably get me banned.

Unlike a cell phone, the L.E. will need a WARRANT to access my home or office computer or phone.
Not likely to be “In plain sight” for a traffic stop, or the information harvested surreptitiously while a contrived ticket is being written.

I did not decide against owning a cell phone due to this, I merely find it a confirmation that cell phones are more trouble and expense than they are worth to me.

Of course you may now quibble citing the “Patriot Act” and other unconstitutional trash.

Perfectly legal dude!
I live in one of the 37 comparatively “Free” states.
Had to test fire what I built before delivering it to the customer.

I am on 07/C2 firearm manufacturer, and a “Serf” according to LV Ron, LOL!

There’s a whole lot of people trying to change the focus of this thread. That always get me interested in what they are attempting to preempt. Also notice that the ACLU started their investigation in 2008, and there are zero facts since then on what has happened after that date. I expect all the paid shills to start flaming me now.
