Gambia, Mauritania considered as possible destination for Gbagbo's banishment

France has announced that talks for Gbagbo's surrender has failed, and forces loyalty to president elect Alassane Ouattara Wednesday mounted intense attack on the compound of the former president who remained in denial over a lost cause. President Ouattara is reported to be determined not to grant Gbagbo his apparent wish of becoming a martyr by having him killed in the process of forcing him out of hiding...

The latest dreadlock came after Gbagbo refused to sign a UN document acknowledging the internationally recognised Ouattara as president of Ivory Coast... Gbagbo's three main generals also reportedly offered to the UN to ask their men to stop fighting and hand over their weapons in exchange for the cessation of UN bombardment that rocked Gbagbo's camp.

The former Ivorian president is insisting that he must meet with Ouattara for a face-to-face talk, a request Mr Ouattara's camp is reported to have rejected... insisting that Gbagbo leaves the country... South Africa has ruled out the possibility of accepting him.

This just makes me sick. Taking away the Ivory Coast from it’s Christian citizens and handing it over to Muslim interlopers.

Good work, Sarkozy! As for the UN, they are now totally evil.

Think they have room for BamBam too? Sounds like just the place for him.

When I started to read the headline I was hoping that the word "destination" would be followed by "new UN headquarters."

The Gambia was where Kunta Kinte came from, if Alex Haley's genealogical research was done correctly.

if Alex Haley's genealogical research was done correctly.

Mr. Haley's "genealogical research" was done in previously published novels he plagiarized. There was no research. He lied, and was caught and sued, and paid up, as I recall. His "history" was fiction (largely other people's), which was why it was sentimental, inaccurate, and perfectly PC.

Now it's not doing him much good, wherever he is.

I knew he was found to have included material from other people's work ("accidentally" he claimed) but didn't know if anyone had disproven his claims to have preserved oral traditions of his first American ancestor. I know it has been claimed that the folks in Gambia learned in advance what he was saying about Kunta Kinte and made up a story to fit his family tradition, but I don't know if that is true or not.

I heard Haley speak once in person, before Roots was published, but never tried to make it through the novel.

Of course Haley was earlier the author of the "autobiography" of Malcolm X (the reliability of which cannot be assumed).
