Lufthansa, KLM Cancel Flights to Tokyo's Narita Airport

Panicked passengers hoping to flee Japan waited for hours at the country's largest international airport today as concerns about radioactive fallout heightened.

The international and domestic terminals at Narita International Airport were crammed with passengers leaving the capital

Germany's Lufthansa airline became the first major carrier to cancel flights to irst major carrier to cancel flights to Narita International Airport, which services Tokyo, and will reroute all flights through Nagoya and Osaka, some 300 miles south of the capitol. Dutch carrier KLM followed.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said, "There is no credible information available at this point indicating" a need to avoid Narita airport.

While the United States and Britain told their citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Tokyo, France told its citizens to evacuate the city, a markedly different instruction than from the government urging residents to remain calm.

Korean Airlines arranged special charter flights out of Narita to take Koreans out. The company offered discounted one-way tickets. Priority goes to Koreans living in Japan who are likely to be affected by the explosion.

China organized a mass evacuation of the thousands of Chinese who work in factories in the Fukushima area, planning to bus them to the airport and bringing in extra flights to take them home.

"It is a heart-wrenching decision, but the situation does not appear good," he said while standing in line with his wife to check in at Narita airport.

Those who can't leave the country or are keeping their options open are moving further south to Osaka.

Emperor Akihito, the country's revered 77-year-old monarch did little to reassure the country in a rare public address, saying: "With the help of those involved I hope things will not get worse."

I heard about this yesterday. They said people were quietly leaving Tokyo. Guess it’s getting more desperate :( As far as I’m concerned they can all come here. They are smart, educated, polite, hard working, they won’t be a drain on the welfare system. And they’d be a great asset to this country.

In fact, the governments of many countries are now openly telling their citizens to get out.

Well, it’s sounding worse by the minute. I think they put a happy face on it as long as they could. I’m sure they didn’t want people to panic and they probably really didn’t know how bad it would get. I was hearing stuff all over the place about the radiation. How it wouldn’t be that bad. Then someone else said it’s a disaster. Hard to know who to believe. I just know radiation isn’t something you want to mess with. God bless those who have stayed behind in the nuclear power plants :( I can’t even imagine.

Hard to know who to believe

Absolutely...Compounded by the fact the Japanese have a difficult time occasionally, being upfront and forthright...

BTW, CA state’s Asian population posted the biggest rate of growth, up 31 percent in the past decade.

I have no trouble at all with Japanese and most Asian people.

No.Atmospheric gasses have an extremely short half life when radiated.

Were I on the Gulf coast in the path of a hurricane, I would get to a shelter. The science here though is like the science in global warming - countered by what you were supposed to learn in school but probably flushed from your mind by the end of the next semester.

There is vastly more danger in Japan right now from diseases born in the rotting rubble from the tsunami than there is from nuclear radiation unless you are actually in one of the power plants.

Some people will fall for one socialist inspired environmentalism scheme after another no matter how simple it is to counter intellectually.

I am not one of them, and I will ridicule those who are.

I might be sarcastic enough to bring it up again 5 years later when they look damned stupid.

Science? You have no idea who I am, and I am confident you're not a mind reader or some kind of psychic...BTW, I built my own computer remote controlled optical observatory How about you?

Fact is I said I would leave Japan, and I would if I was there and had a choice... I never suggested anything about radiations levels, or what they might be. I only said I would bail if possible.

Try reading more slowly.

What is the subject of this article, given in its headline?

Try reading more slowly.

Try reading the title of the threads you post in. It gives the subject and people you debate with will assume that you had comprehended the subject.
