The problem is selective uptake of iodine by your thyroid. Flooding your body with non-hot iodine prevents, in theory, uptake of the radioiodine.
Yes- your bones will take up strontium-90, and there are other issues with ingesting/inhaling “fallout”.
But you can do something about the iodine, so people want KI tabs to do whatever they can.
People who sell KI will sometimes misrepresent what it does and how it works.
If there is a huge uncontained meltdown, there will be *some* radiation in CONUS and *some* pretty much everywhere. It likely will not be much relative to how much it would take to *really* hurt you, but the media will try very hard to scare us all with dis- and mis-information.
Rats - I replaced my expired batch a few years ago. Pitched the old ones. Wish I'd known (now I do).
