When immigrants sponsor in their relatives, as this woman's family did, they are required to sign an Affidavit of Support accepting legal responsibility for financially supporting the sponsored immigrant(s) until they become U.S. citizens or can be credited with 40 quarters of work. The hospital can and should sue the relatives for her costs. The Affidavit of Support usually requires the sponsor to pay medical bills out of pocket.

If the immigrant receives any "means-tested public benefits," the sponsor is responsible for repaying the cost of those benefits to the agency that provided them. If the sponsor does not repay the debt, the agency can sue you in court to get the money owed. Needless to say, our government only rarely enforces the Affidavits of Support.

Behind the back of the court-appointed "guardian" who sentenced her to death.

For one. And Georgetown University Hospital. And the cheering section who have been rooting for her death. And for the anyone else who was either involved in the attempt to murder her, or supported the murder in any way.

No death penalty?

Death penalty for the sponsor? So you are one of those people who think that promises are made to be broken, and that everyone else should pick up the pieces. I call that dishonest. Wouldn’t want to enter into a contract with you. I don’t have anything against this woman, and I certainly don’t want her to die. But her family should be held responsible for her medical costs, not me.

Read the article. She was working she did have benefits. She left the job to care for her grandchildren. I guess deciding to care for her grandchildren is pretty much proof she is lazy scum draining the taxpayer dry.

Stroke care is very expensive. Private insurance for a 58 year old woman, especially if there were health issues most likely was unaffordable. It would be unlikely for her relatives to be able to afford to pay the bill totally out of pocket all at once. Not sure what the hospital was demanding.

You sure read a lot more into that than what I actually said. This thread is about her being spared the death penalty for non-payment of bills. I never said she didn’t owe the money. I just don’t share the belief that she should be executed for failure to pay.

Your money or my money?

Oh yeah, you have not sent a dime to pay for her care. Have you?

How much money have you sent to pay for her care, or her murder, as the case may be?

She explained her reasoning for having the feeding tube removed to the Times in an e-mail: “Generically speaking, what gives any one family or person the right to control so many scarce health care resources in a situation where the prognosis is poor, and to the detriment of others who may actually benefit from them?”

a death panel of one.

Or you could put your money where your mouth is. Just how much money have you sent to pay for this poor women’s care?

Yeah, that is what I thought.

Please tell us your monetary contribution to help keep this woman alive.

My family's direct contributions that provide medical care to the poor are in excess of $50K per year. Yours?

Did you contact the hospital to render your support?

My family has given more that $500K to Georgetown over the years. Yours?

Please tell us your support is not limited to a thread.

What is YOUR support? Oh yeah, you want her to die.

While this event is tragic..unfettered immigration will be our doom.

Since when is LEGAL immigration "unfettered"?

I read the article the first two times it was posted. I know the circumstances. Her children are and should be held responsible for her care. It is a tragic situation. But, as is inevitably the case, people other than those responsible for the situation (including her decision to quit her job for the convenience of her children) will end up paying for it.
