Telemundo's 'La Reina del Sur' Tops Broadcast in Ratings
Hollywood Reporter ^ | March 10, 2011

The Spanish-language soap topped Univision and English-language broadcast networks in the adults 18-34 demo in its time period Tuesday. It's not a good sign when a Spanish-language soap tops English-language broadcast networks. That's what happened Tuesday night at 10 p.m. with Telemundo's La Reina del Sur. The program was No. 1 in its time slot in the adults 18-49 and 18-34 demographics, according to Nielsen.

In the latter demo, La Reina topped CBS, ABC, NBC and Univision in the period.

La Reina drew 2.9 million viewers and roughly 1.93 million were in the ad-favored 18-49 demo. For Monday and Tuesday's telecasts, La Reina has averaged 1.89 million in the demo, up 7 percent from its premiere week. In adults 18-34, La Reina had its best ratings to date with 1.13 million.

Some kind of turning point? Death knell for the networks? It beat ALL the competition, English, Spanish or whatever.

Soon we will see prime-time TV programs on the main alphabet media networks in Spanish. It WILL happen.

When you allow the floodgates of immigration (including an insane illegal immigration number) to remain open, it is no surprise that Spanish anything continues to grow at an incredible rate.

Further - the lack of backbone to do what nearly every other civilized nation in the world has done - make a language the “official” language - is now paying dividends, but not the kind we want or need.

Have you ever seen Latino broadcasts?

The women are hotter than hot and USA censorship standards are ignored.

They usually skate on the edge of porn.

And that is just the News. The Telenovellas are even more risque.

La Usurpadora was an incredibly risque program many years ago. But then the censors got it and ripped it to shreds.

If you like risque, watch them during the first run. If you don’t, watch the re-runs, which are heavily edited.

And don’t forget 300 channels of infomercials all night and most of the day. P.C. doesn’t allow many old shows and movies to be shown. Somebody somewhere in the P.C. wagon will be offended.

Smoking hot. And even better when the volume is turned off.

The Latino news channels cook too. None of this PC crap of keeping women news broadcasters on until they're collecting their social security checks.

I loved La Usurpadora. I watched it first run and I don’t remember it being any more risque than the others at that time. They have gradually worked their way toward soft porn in some cases. El Cuerpo del Deseo was pretty hot stuff. Perro Amor and Sortilegio were definitely soft porn. Reina del Sur is farther out there than any I have seen.

>>Smoking hot. And even better when the volume is turned off.<<

Isn’t that true in real time with women of all ethnicities in general?

(I am SOOOOOO gonna get it, ain’t I?)

I know from watching a condensed version of a Mexican telenovela that the hot babe observation is true.

The other aspect is the format. The telenovela doesn’t go on for 30 years.

And this is how I rank Asian dramas/lakom/teleserye/etc for hot babes.

1) Thailand—oh, those half Thais
2) China—so many cute as a button
3) Philippines—oh, those half Pinays
4) Japan
5) Vietnam—I see hotter Vietnamese women wandering around this US town, though
6) Korea—a lot of homely types among the beauties

I watch La Reina del Sur, and I don't speak any Spanish, and my ancestry is German, English, and Swedish.

The soft porn aspect doesn't appeal to me. It's seeing people smoking cigarettes. In bars, at restaurants, sitting on their stoop.

Also, they film at a lot of different scenic locations.

There is one thing to consider. There is only one network for our non-English speaking friends. The rest of us can scatter over 200+ channels and on demand and Netflix type endeavors. This may be like the old days for us over 30 people who only had four channels and usually gravitated to one. PBS obviously.
