Okay, let’s say hot lava is runnning down my street and it flows into my house, damages the floors, walls, ceilings and roof, and at the same time destroys most of my personal possessions.

Would I be better off making a claim on my fire insurance, my flood insurance or my avalanche insurance?

I can see claims for fire or avalanche being denied because the substance that caused my loss was a liquid at the time it entered my home.

On the other hand, since my loss pretty much resulted from my stuff bursting in to flames, I foresee trouble trying to make a flood or avalanche claim.

And, since the damage was caused by large quantities of rock entering my house as a result of the force of gravity I can foresee the fire and flood insurance people arguing that my loss was a result of an avalanche (albiet a SLOW moving one) and denying my fire or flood claim.

Boy, what a quandry...

I believe Kilauea is the most active volcano above the ocean on the planet.

True. It's also the most longest-erupting volcano in the entire solar system.

I was on the island when she took the road for good back in the 80’s. I had flown into Hilo and had to make an appointment in Kona. Going south I wqas about an hour late.

I drove all the way back to hilo, up north and over to get about twenty miles from where I had been stopped.

When I got back to my island the next day I realized I was so intent on business I didn’t remember seeing any of the trip. I moved back to the mainland a couple months later.

You would obviously need a volcano insurance rider on your policy for that.

Don't expect to get a penny. The insurance company will label it an "act of God". That exclusion is present in nearly every insurance policy.

My dream vacation would be to visit a volcano, likely Iceland or Alaska... I hate hot climates. The wife wants to go to Aruba... again...

Read years back about an artist who mounted Pacific drift wood into fresh lava from Kilauea. Then he and his wife sculpted the wood into some rather fabulous creations.

Volcanic activity is the oldest thing on the planet. Mass awareness of such is one of the newest things.

Won’t matter. Volcanic eruption is considered an “act of God” and isn’t covered by darn near anything at all.

This is my backyard. Drove through Volcano National Park yesterday and saw the sky glowing red on the horizon in late afternoon. It’s always entirely unpredictable, other than that they have been measuring a rising level of magma in one of the main craters.

For all I know, this will be my last post...

I think I can squeeze out one more post.

Smokingfrog, eh? I don't know if you realize the Big Island, east (rainy) side has been overrun with coqui frogs from Puerto Rico over the last few years. Our former still tropical nights are a constant cacaphony of frog come-hither calls. If the lava erupts and runs toward Hilo, at least we will be able to celebrate all of the smoking frogs (but I'm glad you'll be spared).

There is a German artist who wears lava gloves and actually catches live lava flows and sculpts the lava.

Can’t recall his name, but there is another German artist who makes fantastic 3D pavement art. You look at it a certain way, and it blows you away.

Bit off topic but fun to check out
