LAS VEGAS -- Nevada reportedly has the largest share of illegal workers in the nation, yet many local companies say they support efforts to curb their hiring.
Across the country, more than 1,000 companies learned they'll face an inspection by Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents.
Stats from the Pew Hispanic Center shows 10 percent of the people working in Nevada aren't authorized. ICE is taking steps to stop them, but local companies are doing their part to protect the credibility of their business.
Every time there's an opening, the response at Rebel Refrigeration and Air Conditioning is overwhelming.
"For just an administrative assistant, we had probably close to a 150 to 200 applicants," said owner Joe Johnson.
You may have the skills and experience, but that's not enough to get hired here. Applicants must have a form of ID, take a drug test, and submit to a background check like E-Verify.
"We verify their last seven years of history of where they lived and criminal background," said operations manager Jack Heywood.
As recent as last July, Homeland Security agents as targeted 30 suspected illegal immigrants at a local bus station. Critics of the raids say they weren't treated with respect.
"I think they are a good idea. I also think they should remain humane to the people," said Johnson.

Dear President Obama:
I’m planning to move my family and extended family into Mexico for my health, and I would like to ask you to assist me.
We’re planning to simply walk across the border from the U.S. Into Mexico, and we’ll need your help to make a few arrangements.
We plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws.
I’m sure they handle those things the same way you do here. So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Calderon, that I’m on my way over?
Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:
1. Free medical care for my entire family.
2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.
3. Please print all Mexican government forms in English.
4. I want my grandkids to be taught Spanish by English-speaking (bi-lingual) teachers.
5. Tell their schools they need to include classes on American culture and history.
6. I want my grandkids to see the American flag on one of the flag poles at their school.
7. Please plan to feed my grandkids at school for both breakfast and lunch.
8. I will need a local Mexican driver’s license so I can get easy access to government services.
9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico , but, I don’t plan to purchase car insurance, and I probably won’t make any special effort to learn local traffic laws.
10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car has at least one English-speaking officer.
11. I plan to fly the U.S. Flag from my house top, put U S. Flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.
12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, or have any labor or tax laws enforced on any business I may start.
13. Please have the president tell all the Mexican people to be extremely nice and never say critical things about me or my family, or about the strain we might place on their economy.
14. I want to receive free food stamps.
15. Naturally, I’ll expect free rent subsidies.
16. I’ll need Income tax credits so that although I don’t pay Mexican Taxes, I’ll receive money from the government.
17. Please arrange it so that the Mexican Gov’t pays $4,500 to help me buy a new car.
18. Oh yes, I almost forgot, please enroll me free into the Mexican Social Security program so that I’ll get a monthly income in retirement.
I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all his people who walk over to the U.S. From Mexico . I am sure that President Calderon won’t mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.
Thank you so much for your kind help.
You’re the man!!!
I say BS. I think the number of "unauthorized" workers in NV is more than 10%...also, J-Nap isn't going to let ICE force Dingy Harry and the Dims voting block/protestors out of NV. Just more Chicago tap dancing.
What gall. You are a criminal
You have violated our supposed sovereign border.
Seems like nobody has to prove they are a US citizen these days. Including the Zero.
Well put. Awesome.
Post of the day. Maybe of the month. Awesome!!!
I think employers should be targetted. With severe penalties involved, not just fines. Jail time.
They left off the end of the sentence - "to vote."
Why also aren’t they cracking down on the employers of illegals? Makes no sense at all. The unpunished employers will rehire more illegals as soon as the dust from this crackdown clears..... A slap on the hand is the same as a tax write-off when it comes to profits.
“ICE Cracking Down on Illegal Workers”
Horse crap.
Once again:
Here in South Florida we have whole towns where the majority of residents are illegals.
LaBelle, Pahoke, South Bay, Immokolee, Indiantown, and others are filled with illegals who work for big sugar, big cattle and big citrus. And the funny thing is you NEVER see an ice agent or agents in these cities.
They could close down the single road going through these places and check papers and arrest more than half the town.
Course these big three are large political contributors.
Ping!
ICE has some hard working officers, I’m sure, but I’ve seen military MPs call ICE about illegals caught trying to work on construction by attempting entry with bad ID and the Provost Marshal was told to set them loose. ICE was to busy too pick them up.
Yep,
Too busy. ?
Doing what?
Sitting, watching the clock. Waiting for retirement and a fat check for life?
