'All Those Stupid Things Richard [Dreyfuss] Says'
Human Events ^ | February 18, 2011 | Jason Mattera

You may have missed it, but this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) didn’t just play host to a myriad of presidential candidates, but to famed actor Richard Dreyfuss too.

Dreyfuss didn’t have a speaking slot at the premier conservative gathering, but rather was milling around the conference with his friend Roger Simon of PJTV.

Is the star of Jaws, Close Encounters, and W even a conservative? No, not in the least. In an impromptu interview with HUMAN EVENTS at CPAC, Dreyfuss strangely described his political leanings as “libo-conservo-rado-middle-of-the-road-o.”

When asked how he felt being around so many right-of-center individuals, Dreyfuss compared the experience to a fairy tale. “Sometimes it feels like normal life, other times it feels like Alice in Wonderland."

Slurring his words often, the Tinsel Town star had several conference participants wondering if he was “blitzed” during the interview.

Meandering around CPAC must’ve been otherworldly for Dreyfuss. His politics are not even on the same planet as mainstream Republicans. After all, he wants the Bush administration tried for "high crimes." In fact, the only way he’d vote against Obama in 2012, he tells HUMAN EVENTS, is if the Republican nominee pledges to indict President Bush and those associated with the Iraqi conflict for war crimes.

But Dreyfuss’ bizarre political ranting didn’t end there. He accused the U.S. military of terrorism and even falsely claimed that the first Medal of Honor recipient in World War II was a “suicide bomber.”

“What army has not used terror?” Dreyfuss intoned. When told that our military’s tactics are plainly different from the actual terrorist outfit al-Qaeda, he claimed that the United States Air Force “in toto was guilty of terrorism” due to the trail of collateral damage left after bombings.

In erroneously asserting that the first Medal of Honor recipient in World War II was America’s version of a kamikaze pilot, Dreyfuss said, “His name is Colin Kelly and he put his plane into an aircraft carrier.”

Not even close to the truth.

By the way, Capt. Colin P. Kelly was never the recipient of the Medal of Honor. And he wasn’t a suicide bomber either.

The Florida native’s bombardier came under heavy attack by Japanese artillery and was unable to escape before the plane exploded. According to Tallahassee magazine, as Kelly struggled to maintain control of the aircraft’s damaged instrument panels, he gave the order for “his crew [to jump] out one by one through various escape hatches.”

Kelly’s actions saved the life of his crew members, and for that display of courage, he was posthumously given the Distinguished Service Cross.

Perhaps Dreyfuss knew that his account of Kelly’s military career was revisionist. This is how he encouraged us to verify the story: “Go into the room that says, ‘All those stupid things Richard says.’ ”

Dreyfuss was on FOX about two weeks ago for some reason or other and without a doubt he is a few bricks short of a load. I'm surprised he does not need supervision.

I don’t care at all about Richard Drefuss, but I do consider Hollywood and their ongoing attempt at profiteering and manipulating Americans through the entertainment media, and their efforts to destroy family values and place rap, porn and X rated movies and profits at the fore front as posing some serious harm to most Americans.

It has become about Hollywood and their corrupt greedy billionaire members filled with the DNA of greed, and they should be considered villain numero uno in the USA.

Dreyfuss is a good actor, and can recite words others write in a convincing manner. That is as far as it goes.

He actually thinks he’s talking coherently. BTW - anybody see the movie “Mr. Holland’s Opus” Notice how he aged and nobody else did? I think it’s the same in real life. To him civility is vitriolic harangues at Conservatives not seeing or hearing what the Left is saying.

I think he has his hero’s mixed up. Lofton Henderson was born on May 24, 1903 in Lorain, Ohio. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1926. Prior to World War II, he served in China, and various Caribbean stations, and on aircraft carriers Langley (CV-1), Ranger (CV-4), and Saratoga (CV-3). Major Henderson was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism at the historic Battle of Midway, one of the decisive battles of history. While leading 16 Marine Corps planes in a glide bombing attack on the aircraft carrier HiryÅ«, his left wing burst into flames as he began his final approach. Henderson continued the attack and perished as his plane dived toward the enemy carrier. Typical Lib. can’t get a story straight if it had to save his life.

As jacked as his views are, going to CPAC seems to show that he is at least being a good sport and listening to the other side. I think he deserves credit for that

In fairness to Dreyfuss it was first reported and is still widely believed that Kelly flew his B-17 into a Japanese battleship.

I saw that interview and the gist of schtick was that people needed to donate money to his “thinktank” foundation if they wanted to solve the world’s problems. You should have seen Steve Doocy’s eyebrow arch.

It is not the suicide that makes suicide bombing terrorism, it’s their target, innocent civilians. They would be at least equally morally objectionable if the bombers managed to survive their attacks.

AFAIK, nobody called the kamikazes of WWII terrorists, because their objectives were legitimate military targets.

But you knew that.

I don't think he called Kelly a terrorist.

Per the article he said the U.S. Air Force was "guilty of terrorism" and, no, I won't stick up for him for saying that but I don't think he was referring to Kelly.

I think Dreyfuss is clueless and is not a deep thinker but I think he can become educated, and if he does he will come over to our side and that will be a good thing.

And I commend Roger Simon for trying to educate him.

Here's how he behaved when I interviewed him at CPAC in the Blogger's Lounge. Strange.

Dreyfuss is as pompous and stupid in real life as the character he played in “What About Bob?” Maybe he wasn’t acting.

Hey, I'm OK with pompous and stupid converts.

One less pompous and stupid person voting for 0 is one less vote for 0.
