One day after Reno's City Council approves the proposed budget, the city's fire chief and police chief start letting go of employees. We're already seeing the effects of the layoffs around town.

I can’t believe this hasn’t started before, in light of all the problems Nevada’s economy has been having. NJ is finally getting hit with it, but at least officially I think the media is pretending Nevada is in worse shape.

Damn near every city in America would be BETTER off if they layed off at least 20% of the cops. We are overpoliced and they are basically just harassing your every day citizens for lack of anything else to do or trolling for cash writing BS tickets to justify their salaries.

Or killing our dogs...

Why is it city halls and government offices are so big and opulent, with large leather chairs, huge expensive curved seating arrangements, 200" monitor screens like the one in this image? These are public servants?

Agreed. The Dems in Congress, I think the Senate, want to pass a bill to make BAB allowed until 2012. BAB or Build America Bonds let toilets sell muni bonds to keep paying the union workers big money.

The GOP House should stop this. Bernake and O*ama will have to think of another way to get them money. Keep cutting. Cut cut cut.

Above is Reno's expensive city council chambers...Below is Long Beach, CA. Why is so much money wasted for these government offices? Why are these public servants treated as royalty?

Lt. Dangle, Jones, Garcia, and the women are protected classes and therefore are guarenteed employment for life; I guess Junior’s got to go. What did he do when they were let go in the past? I think he operated a carnival ride.

Great show; thanks for a laugh!

Excellent, excellent statement.

All these small communities have to pay for themselves.
You got a little crack in your light lens, your pulled over.
Go ahead a make a mistake and look like your weaving in lanes, your pulled over.
Forget a turn signal, your dead.
You get the idea.

While I am pro-law enforcement, I could not agree more...We are way over policed and over taxed.

He has to wear them, even though as he says they are “non-regulation”; he is a “law enforcement cheetah”. I like when he wears his new cowboy boots with them...

The first time I was watching that show my wife walked it and thought it was a real “Cops” episode; she couldn’t understand why he was wearing those shorts...

He’s also got the great “Burning Man” costume (a devil).

Once many policemen stopped serious law enforcement (due to political constrictions placed on them - see NJ racial profiling) and became revenue agents, then any “enforcement” or “protection” basically ended. Newark, Jersey City, and Camden (all cities in NJ) just laid off a lot of cops; while there will be a work slow-down, the impact will be negligible - the cops were told to “stand down” in those areas decades ago. As one told me, “We do accident reports”; when the profiling (not really racial) stopped on the NJ Turnpike, all of our cities saw rises in gun crimes. Those state troopers were catching a lot of guns & drugs heading north into our state, and when told to “stand down” they basically had to sit back and watch it pass by. Within months our urban mayors were wailing about the crime increases, but the damage was done - now they are like Somalia, but very carefully mask their crime stats (like NYC does). They’d even used state troopers for a time in Camden to police areas the local police had abandoned to the mutants; they were pulled out quickly after a large number of justified shooting by the state troopers (and the areas reverted to the mutants once more).

In other news, 57-year old former police chief (”Mr. Jones”) tees off at 9 AM for his daily golf game, has a relaxing lunch and cocktails, showers, takes a small nap and will be at the Harrah’s poker table by 4 PM for the daily $100 buy-in tournament.

In other words, pensions are not touched.

This is standard operating procedure in any government entity that’s been told to cut spending. The first thing they cut, the only thing, is front end staff. They want to send a message to taxpayers right off the bat so rather than cut administration, programs, facilities or travel, they lay off teachers cops and firefighters.

I understand from people that have been to Reno that the city is really suffering finacially...business closing as well as casinos...sad...but this is what you get when you let ever 100 member tribe or so build huge casinos in cities off their reservations.......and they pay no taxes....

They laid off the “parking enforcement” unit downtown.

To those out of state or unfamiliar with Reno, NV: with all the free parking downtown provided from the casinos, this seems like a no brainer.

Before anyone complains about the layoffs, answer this.

Have you seen an increase in fire deaths, fire damage, or crime in cities that have already enacted these layoffs?

Answer: No.

So, there is no scientific or economic reason not fire all these layabouts union members who are bankrupting us.

This is the shape of things to come, kiddies!

Police and fire unions will NEVER agree to the brutal pay cuts needed to make for a workable budget, so the only alternative is massive layoffs. Huge layoffs!

This is all part of the drive to make us a third-world country. Obambi thinks we’re too rich and we deserve to be taken down a notch. Social justice at its best. They can’t make everybody rich, so they’ll settle for making everybody poor.

If your town had 50 cops before, get used to the idea of 5 cops tomorrow. And start thinking about providing your own home defense.
