President Obama watched Hosni Mubarak's speech to Egyptians from the conference room on Air Force One, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs tells the pool. Obama is now headed to the White House for a meeting with his national security team, moments after Mubarak said he wouldn't step down but that he had given some powers to his vice president.

Obama will now make Mubarak the US’s enemy. It will give Obama what he loves most - a “community organizers cause.” It will allow him to claim he is “promoting democracy,” and can burnish his 3rd world Muslim credentials.
Watch for sanctions, aid-cut off, anti-Mubarak UN resolutions, etc...

All day I was thinking, there is no way Mubarak steps down... even when FOX reported it. Then I knew he would embarrassed Obama in his speech. But what do I know, I am just the little guy who blogs..

Poor Obama. With all the resources at his command, he still can’t pull off a revolution against an ally and stabilizing figure in the Middle East. I guess destroying the USA is proving to be a little harder than he expected.

Is it possible that the King of Saudi Arabaia is going to bankroll a Mubarak-led Egypt? If so, will oil prices go up so that he can afford it? This could be the 1970’s all over again.

The reporting of Mubarak’s resignation demonstrates how news coverage has morphed into advocacy...they were trying to manufacture an event by pre-announcing it. Good luck with that; the mask is off.

If Barak had ANY political acumen at all, or if he had not insisted on surrounding himself with sycophantic worshipers, he would have seen this coming and tried to get Mubarak to defuse the situation by announcing a more democratic form of government.
But no, he had to go with against our ally (again) and try to install a theocracy in Egypt.

As I’ve listened to the confused news coming out of Egypt, I’ve been thinking all day that Mubarak was setting Obamie up for a really big embarrassement.
Mubarak scores a homerun. Obama scores another big “0”.
How do you say “mincemeat” in Egyptian?
He can attempt all the vindictive tricks he chooses, but he won’t succeed against the likes of Mubarak.

As Ive listened to the confused news coming out of Egypt, Ive been thinking all day that Mubarak was setting Obamie up for a really big embarrassement.Mubarak has been at this for 60 years, and in charge for 30. He has quite a few tricks up his sleeve. He knows how to deal with enemies and how to hold on to power and it is now clear that he fully intends to hold onto that power as long as possible, at least until September.

This happened before. Obama calls for something, Hosni does the opposite. The Saud is right- Obama should not humiliate Hosni. THAT is a lot of the problem. Grandstanding Obama causing problems. Much of what Obama does day by day, should be done by cabinet-level or lower subordinates. Forget policy differences, or his lack of backbone, or inability to make decisions- he’s trying to be POTUS in addition to SoS.

Mubarak is either delusional or very confident . His statement today was a classic psychological sucker punch to the opposition which will produce real rage. Perhaps the armed forces leadership have signed on and there are enough reliable units to be able to try what the Shah never would or could bring himself to try e.g. Tianamen Square cubed. If this is not the case the only effect will be to increase the already significant influence of the MB as real chaos now is unleashed. It should be interesting to watch which ever way events fall.
