Princesse Ghislaine de Polignac Obituary
Telegraph, UK ^ | February 3, 2011

Posted on 02/05/2011 3:37:31 PM PST by La Lydia

She was born Ghislaine Brinquant in Biarritz on September 5 1918, daughter of Victor Brinquant, a Parisian, and Simone Durand de Villers. A vivacious blonde, Ghislaine caught the eye of Prince Edmond, scion of one of France’s great families, and they married in Paris on July 7 1939, when she was 20. She later made an equally vivid impression on the British ambassador in Paris, Duff Cooper, who invited her to lunch at Larue’s in February 1946, afterwards noting in his diary:...Ghislaine informed the ambassador that — having married and produced four children — she considered that she had done her duty and was now determined to have a good time. He mused: “I have no doubt she will succeed in doing so. I shall do my best to help her.”...

There Ghislaine became involved in something of a cause célèbre. On the afternoon before one of Kitty Miller’s famous New Year’s Eve parties, Mrs Winston went to the hairdresser and came home to find Ghislaine in bed with her husband. At the party she announced this to the assembled company....The story got into the newspapers, and not long afterwards Norman Winston felt obliged to transfer a considerable holding of stocks to his wife, along with a platinum mink cape and some emeralds.

Beaton relished this “really juicy scandal” and tried it out on Greta Garbo, with whom he was pursuing a somewhat tortured love affair. She was not impressed...He got a better hearing from Lady Diana Cooper, who wrote back: “I’m awfully sorry for her [Ghislaine]. True, in 100,000,000 Americans she was foolish to pick Mr Winston, but poor girl to have to crawl back to Rheims, tail gripped between those ungovernable legs. Humiliation.”...

This has to be one of the bitchiest obits I have ever read in my life, and hilariously funny to boot. "Princesse Ghislaine de Polignac, who has died aged 92, was the former wife of Prince Edmond de Polignac, and more than once survived crises that would have consigned a less determined person to social ostracism."

Amazing what a difference money and rich connections make....if she lived in a trailer park, she’d have been a skank......

She probably wrote it herself and left it with her solicitor to be published upon her demise.

“if she lived in a trailer park, she’d have been a skank......”

That would have been a great last sentence of her obituary had anyone the guts to include it.

Her comment about Dubrovnik didn’t make sense—maybe she just didn’t know much about what was then Yugoslavia. Dubrovnik’s population is almost all Croatian, so her idea that if you want to commit suicide, go to Dubrovnik and say “I’m Croat” and that will inspire someone to shoot you is nuts.

Sounds like she was always in the eye of the storm, doesn't it?

People like this are often good to know, but are rarely good to be friends with.

She’s probably in shock. That was the era when pretty well brought up young women with no life experience were married off to older men with titles. They had little say in the marriage and often were starry eyed at the idea of a title. The reality was they were traded to her money for the connection and title and were only intended to produce heirs while the husband went on with his life and affairs either with other women or men.
I have always felt sorry for young women of that time even the ones who seemingly had everything often had very little.

Pero puta significa “prostitute.” There is a difference between a prostitute and a skank.

Ah! Like Princess Diana. She was treated like brood pig and then discarded.

or men

I wouldn't be surprised. I would suspect that many of those little boys in boarding schools were sexually abused by the older boys and/or the staff and then grew up to be homosexuals themselves.
