They did? Not conservatives. So be it. Perhaps your inheritance will be a tad bit less than you imagined. Some out here never relied or will rely on the government but will want a lot of what they paid in back.

I know my social security payments will be gone whether I retire at 66, 67, or 69. What really scares me and really really ticks me off is all the current talk of the takeover of 401ks and such. I’ve been contributing to various self-funded plans since I was around 28. The key words are SELF-FUNDED. It is MY money that I have deferred the pleasures of MY labors. The mere thought that MY money would be taken and given to those that did not prepare for their retirement makes my blood boil.

That will be the straw that breaks my back.

How about end all congressional pensions? This wasn’t set up to be a gravy train for life.

What Congress needs to do is to peg social security benefits age to three years more than the average life expectancy AND to remind people that social security is NOT a retirement program.

There's a problem with this. First, a lot of people are not capable of working at age 81. Second, with automation, there are currently more workers than jobs. In the 1880s, around 75% of all Americans made their living from agriculture of some sort. Now, it's around 3%. There is the manufacturing capacity right now to put every driver in a new car every three years. There simply are not enough jobs for that many workers.

You starting to see how government turns people into slaves??? They spend wildly, then force you work more years...to pay it off...

Well, if we could shut down the FDA and USDA, then there might be a legitimate reason to raise the retirement age, because people would be living longer.

Your generation chose to spend that money -——————

Your beloved big government CHOSE to spend that money...not the people...they had that money taken from their checks...then the government spent it so people like you can have ‘free’ stuff...

GET IT????

“The mere thought that MY money would be taken and given to those that did not prepare for their retirement makes my blood boil.”

It already has. The key is to protect our kids and grandkids from the real monsters - the baby boom generation. If they have their way, they’ll simply enslave our young ones through huge taxes and crappy standard of living...why tending to their bed pans.

That’s who I REALLY WANT to protect - our generation is a lost cause, the money has already been stolen from us.

If you are really angry (like me), we need to turn Social Security into a welfare program NOW, and kick off the Winnebego Club from the system. NOW.

I’d be happy to have the 12.4% of my earnings for the next 30 years to put toward my retirement.

I don’t care for Graham at all, but this is the practical reality of the situation, as far as Social Security is concerned, and this alone may not be enough.

But, on to the rest of the story. It will exacerbate unemployment to extend the working years of the population. Retirements create vacancies. Vacancies mean hiring and promotion.

Rock and a hard place.

that idea is a double edge’d sword... yes it will help the solvency of social security... BUT it will also drive up the unemployment rate...

Remember that the whole concept of retirement was created during the great depression as a way to drive down unemployment by getting older workers to voluntarily leave the workforce (retirement)
