Happened to be in Quebec. I figure that it was a 160 toll ot visit the city.
I declined to have the state easy pass. I always am in the cash line and take my time since the tolls are high. I notice rectntly that there are few in the easy pass lanes and more in the toll lanes. More people tired of being tracked by the governement?
Stay away from San Frisky. It's a dirty, smelly city.
I had to spend a week there in the late 90s; couldn't wait to get out.
It was nice once, but that was a LONG time ago.
If you rent with a credit card, the rental car company just tacks any fees and fines incurred onto your credit card.
No cop. The cameras will photograph your plate and you'll get a nice little note in the mail.
my tag number changed (FL) and I didn’t update sunpass, and I got a bill for the toll (like a dollar) and I think a 2.50 fee. Very reasonable, considering, though they do advertise 100 dollar fines. Not sure under what circumstances they apply those.
Ran into the same a couple of months ago. They have a (difficult to navigate) website where you can pay the toll online up to 5 or so days after. I did this and the charge, exact amount of the toll, appeared on my corporate card bill. All I lost was the time & hassle of dealing with their website.
Don’t bet on it, why is it the rental cars companies responsibility to pay YOUR bills...
Sorry, but you are under dillusion if you think that is what will happen.
They're not. Which is why they tack it onto your credit card.
I’m surprised nobody here has commented on the big brother aspects of the EZ Pass type systems. Or the fact that many areas of the country don’t have these EZ Pass toll systems, so that out of towners will be naturally confused by it all when traveling to places which do have it. Or that the confusion results in much more money to the governmental entity which collects these inflated fines for failure to pay a toll. Or that even people who do have EZ Pass where they live may find that a different system is used in the place they are visiting.
Is it really the responsibility of all of us to learn about toll collection systems in places we visit and buy a pass or whatever else that locals there do? All of these problems go away if they have a human being at toll booths to help those who don’t know the system and collect the toll. And why is government eliminating toll collector jobs but raising the tolls?
In some places, tolls were instituted on roads to repay the bonds sold to build roads or bridges. I’m surprised that nobody has commented that the tolls remain in place and increase just as taxes do, long after the road or bridge bonds are paid off.
It must have been a joke because we never got one.
>> First, people who cross the bridge without an electronic sensor will be mailed a bill for $6. <<
That would seem to contradict the article, which claimed $110. Can you enlighten us?
The $110 fine applies to another toll facility in California.
The $6 mail-in fee came from a previous article on FR that discusses this topic. Here's a link to another story which mentions the $6 fee.
Toll facilities have been videotaping and photographing cars that pass through long before EZ Pass and similar systems were implemented. The switch to all-electronic toll collection isn't going to change this. Besides, if this is such a major concern, then it is always possible to find an alternative means to get to where you are going.
Im surprised that nobody has commented that the tolls remain in place and increase just as taxes do, long after the road or bridge bonds are paid off.
Agreed. It irritates me to no end that tolls are often siphoned off to pay for things that have nothing to do with the asset being tolled. Ideally, it would be nice if all of the costs for these assets could be paid out of gas taxes, but even those get siphoned off in the same way.
“It was nice once, but that was a LONG time ago.”
When was that?
I don’t know of a time in my 55 years of visiting there!
That is interesting.....
...I have a SunPass and use it when I pass the EZ-Pass toll plazas with no problem. I seem to recall that they made it a priority to merge the systems to prevent your stern letter from the DOT. Unless you are talking about an EZ-Pass from another state.
Don’t go there! There are lots of better places to spend your time and money.
I liked visiting in the 60s. But I was new to it then.
Let me add one thing to this. You also have to select "electronic billing" when you sign up or they charge you $1.50 per month to mail you a bill. Other than that one glitch, I have had no trouble with the Texas Toll Tag system.
Even before I bought the toll tag, I would just get a bill at the end of the month indicating how much I owed. I never received any bill that I couldn't verify, so I'm pretty sure their system works well. And I sure prefer paying for using the roads as I use them rather than paying for someone else's roads all the time.
