NY mayor conducts gun-sale sting in Arizona, says not much has changed after tragedy in Tucson

Weeks after the shooting in Tucson, sellers at an Arizona gun show allowed undercover investigators hired by New York City to buy semiautomatic pistols even after they said they probably couldn't pass a background check, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday.

"After Tucson, you would think that people, particularly at a gun show in Arizona, would have been much more careful in enforcing the law," he said. "That unfortunately in some cases wasn't the case."

Bloomberg has authorized similar sting operations around the country as part of a push for tougher federal laws to help keep guns off the streets of New York.

But in the sensitive aftermath of the shooting Jan. 8 that killed six people and critically wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the mayor was questioned about the time and place of his hidden-camera investigation, a $100,000 operation conducted almost clear across the country.

"Let me get this straight: From New York City, they are going to send people to Arizona to look into this?" said state Sen. Ron Gould, a Republican. "They might take a look a little closer to home if they are concerned about guns getting in their state."

The operators of the Phoenix gun show where the investigators made their buys on Jan. 23 issued a statement Monday saying all exhibitors at its shows are required to follow state and federal gun laws.

"Mayor Bloomberg and his `task force' have no legal authority in the state of Arizona, or in any other place in America except New York City," said the statement from the Crossroads of the West Gun Shows. "These forays into America's heartland committing blatant acts to entrap otherwise innocent gun owners is an unlawful scheme that is created by Bloomberg's task force."

With all the coverage this unlawful action has received, I can't believe Mayor Bloomberg is not being immediately hauled-in on criminal charges.

Bloomberg is a stooge for Islam with the 9/11 Victory Mosque so his company can maintain market access to muslim countries. He is a mega POS.

Did Bloomberg call for better law enforcement from sheriff Doopnik, who knew all about Loughner before the killings?

Bloomberg, you’re a fool.

He can’t even manage his own city and he’s out conducting ‘sting operations’ in other states. This guys gotta go. Illinois, New York and California; can’t we simple sell them to the ChiComs in return for a little debt relief?

What is the mayor of NYC doing messing around in AZ? Shouldn’t his agents be arrested for trespassing? invasion of privacy, or something?

When you are an incompetent Mayor, who won a third term by cheating the laws, you need to divert like a good Lib.

Make up a new political party: No Labels.

Go after guns in other states.

Go after salt usage by food producers in the North East.

Go after smokers.

You can’t let the papers in NYC cover the snow plows, massive flight of taxpayers, rising crime and budget deficits. You need to gin these other things up.

Sorry, but I'm in the camp that wants the laws followed. If AZ isn't policing this, they shouldn't blame the messenger. It's true that NY has many flaws and should be taking care of them, but if AZ isn't taking care of its on own business, they should rightly be ashamed of their laxness.

Arizona should cut political ties and withdraw its ambassador to the People’s Republic of New York.

These people have no authority to be doing this and should be arrested on federal gun charges. It is illegal to purchase a handgun outside your state of residence. To do it legally the gun must be transferred to a licensed dealer in your home state for transfer.

I liked much better the Clint Eastwood “Coogan’s Bluff” version of NY/AZ jurisdictional interloping ..... Arizona lawman brings a criminal to justice in Manhattan despite the bureaucracy of the New York police department.

Glad to hear he's solved all the problems in New York city.

The snow has been plowed; the roads are clean; no homeless; no crime; balanced budget; schools working well; 100% employment; no wonder the Mayor is bored and looking at other places that could use his "help"...

Nimrod.

Did they have the legal authority to do that in another state? If they didn’t the officers and those who sent them might be guilt of federal crimes as well as the dealers.

That is the whole point of the article. These guns were purchased illegally. It's not the purchaser that is at fault, but the seller that didn't follow the laws.
