The WikiLeaks website last week leaked a secret State Department cable from October 31, 2008, directing United States officials to spy on Israel. The cable, dated only days before the 2008 American presidential elections, was signed by then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The recently leaked cable reveals former U.S. President George W. Bush’s foreign policy czar instructing American diplomats in Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, as well as the Defense Intelligence Agency and the CIA, to conduct a massive espionage operation against the Jewish state. The sought-for information covered all aspects of Israel’s political system, society, communications infrastructures and the Israel Defense Forces.

Regarding the IDF, US diplomats and spies were instructed to gather intelligence on planned Israeli military operations against the American-backed Palestinian Authority, Syria and Lebanon.

Don’t we spy on everyone? I sure as heck hope we do. This is ridiculous news. Even Israel knows that we spy on them. Heck Israel spies on us.

Why shouldn’t he...the Israeli State has stolen so many of our secrets...then sold them to China...those in the intelligence community know this as a fact....

Question: If Israel identifies and captures a U.S. spy, should the spy be given life-in-prison like the U.S. has done to Israeli spies?

My wife spies on me...

So she thinks you might do something interesting? That's a compliment. I get to go to the Home Depot and the convenience store without fear of interference.

It's why we have spies...

Any country that doesn't spy...raise your hand.

Thanks...Didn't think so...

A trick I learned from the Mentalist.

It depends what the laws are in Israel. That is a good question though. Of course, we would do everything to ensure he is released.

On a separate issue but something sorta similar. You know how all the Mexicans are crossing the border to live in the United States and get away with it. Why hasn’t a large group of anti-immigration Americans cross the border into Mexico to show them what it is like to be an illegal Mexican. I heard that you are immediately arrested and serve a term in a Mexican jail.....No questions asked. The reason I would love to see it would be to show how hypocritical Mexico is. Mexico’s President telling America that we have to take their folks well let’s turn the script on them. The best that would come out of it would be the Press would show how awful Mexico is to illegals. I think it would work.

“Trust but verify”, “keep your friends close”, etc. ...

I thought this was pretty much an understood part of being allies. I am as pro-Israel as anyone on this planet ... but it would be stupid to NOT spy on Israel.

We’ve caught several Israeli spies, French spies, etc. Our guys get outed in allied countries around the world on occasion. It is the nature of the business.

Israel spies on us, and we spy on Israel. Nothing new here. Remember Jonathan Pollard?

Before answering, are you referring to "spies" or "agents"? There's a huge difference.

Concur.

I am awaiting the shocked horror from the posters who want to nuke Israel because Israel had spies in the USA. “Friends don’t spy, etc.”

Exactly (although he was more of a spy for the highest bidder, I think, which is a completely different ball game of creepy).
