Eh I wouldn’t expet Palin to serve, but she raised a son who volunteered, as did Reagan despite the fact he was legally blind. Surely in North Dakota the GOP can find a candidate who had balls enough to serve in uniform? Not everybody has sat on the sidelines.

All right, I appreciate the response.

All I can tell you is that North Dakota is a small state, small population, with a very limited political class (to the state’s credit, if you ask me) who take such stuff seriously, especially at the level of national office.

They had a young vet-—Sand was his name-—who ran two or three times against the ratty-ass loser 10-term congressman Pomeroy, and the quiet make-no-waves social democrat electorate supported Pomeroy resoundingly every time.

The Dems have held the one house and two senate seats for nearly 30 years, until this year...and they have done a great job making a grateful welfare class out of farmers, Indians and old people, who have made up nearly a plurality of the state’s voters.

But now the oil boom is on and the national Dems have the putrid stink about them and change is afoot. Still you have to tread softly in this sort of mildly communal largely Scandinavian (and Indian) state.

The Republicans who tend to run for office are usually lawyers or big business types...all I can tell you is that Wrigley looks like a breath of fresh air to me, with some currency nationally, and with enough smarts to change of few of the state’s political parameters....

Sarge, let me tell you, I agree with you. I’d rather have some hard-knocks schooling and a little battlefield know-how too, but....

I've never understood why the Dakotas and Montana keep sending D's to represent them in the Senate. If we could win senate seats in states that normally go GOP in presidential elections, we could put the DemocRATS at a permanent disadvantage.

I'm tired of FReepers complaining about RINOs from marginal Republican seats like Maine or Massachusetts voting with DemocRATS on some issues. If we were doing our jobs to get conservative Republicans elected in conservative leaning states, many of those bills would never have even reached to senate floor for a vote.

That is when he is leaving, got to roll up a couple more years on that over paid retirement plan.

Doesn't he get to keep whatever unused campaign contributions he has boodled up, too? If so, watch for the grease to hit those skids...

I believe that campaign funds can not be kept for personal use when an elected official no longer is in office. This was the case when I held public office on a local level.

I'm not familiar with all the federal campaign fund rules and regulations....but generally speaking the money can be donated to a legitimate charity, to the campaign funds of other candidates, to the national party and probably to some other approved entities I'm not aware of.

It certainly can't be used by the "owner" of the fund to finance a vacation to the French Riviera, for example.

So set up a ‘foundation’ and donate the money to it and ‘pay’ relatives to be on the Board of Directors... I’m sure there is a workaround.

A phony foundation? No soap. I DO understand your irony, though, LOL.

Add to my list above....return monies to donors, or pay themselves back for documented personal loans to their own campaign war chests.

I don’t know if you live in North Dakota.

When I look out the windows - that's all I see.

If you know North Dakota politics, you know the paucity of reasonable, electable Republicans, let alone strong solid conservatives.

I disagree - at any rate it could be worse. Imagine trying to recruit Democrats for statewide offices.

I’ll take Wrigley, barring some other unexpected candidate.

Drew Wrigley is going for the governor slot. Why else would a guy with his abilities take a cheesy job like Lt. Governor? Jack Dalrymple is short term seat warmer.

Here's your unexpected candidate - Rob Port. His blog is a great read for ND politics.

Well, you have your perspective, out your frosty window.

If there’s such a bounty of stout conservative Republican candidates willing to run for national office, I guess I wonder why you’ve got the likes of John Hoeven, Rick Berg, and Wayne Stenehjem at the head of the party.

And Jack Dalrymple at the helm of the state.

Have you spoken to Dalrymple through your window? I’ll tell you this much: he’s not talking about warming the seat for a couple years.

Yeah, I know about Rob Port. He is a good blogger. Let me ask you something: Do you think Rob Port would have beaten Earl Pomeroy last year? Do you think he would beat Stenehjem in a primary, in a state that above all likes to reward service and loyalty?

I wasn’t talking about Democrats beating Rebuplicans in the state. I was talking about the availability of staunch true believers with “a history of conservatism,” which you injected into the discussion.

And you come back with a blogger. That’s your view, I guess. But maybe you should get out more?

Who do you think will ultimately run and how conservative are those candidates?

It is too early to tell. My strong opinion will be that eventually it will be someone outside of the party mainstream and that they will be well vetted.

My reason for this opinion is that conservatives in ND (as nationally) are better connected and motivated.

Lieberman too, although CT will most likely stay deep-blue.

I like your inclusion of “we like our football” in the litany of things Alabamans like vis a vis politics. In my experience in an Alabama political race, whether you like Alabama or Auburn can be more important that R vs Dem. ;)

Nice. I can’t see the rats holding that seat. Time to complete the extermination of vermin from the North Dakota delegation.

#8 on my list of Top 10 Senators likely to retire. Already got #3 (Hutchinson) and #7 (Lieberman).

#1 is Webb and #2 is Ensign.

Kind of expecting #4 Kohl to go out. He’s 75 years old and has to be sweating it since Feingold bit the dust.

Ted Kennedy, Jr. (barf) and Susan Bysiewicz (SOS) have been floated as Dem contenders in CT. The GOP seems stuck on McMahon. Since it’s officially an open seat, maybe more Republicans will jump into the fray.
