"If FR dies, that’s that." - Jim Robinson [Jim's reply at post # 588]

FYI -

Here are statements from Jim about the future of FreeRepublic.com for those who missed them. They are quite serious.

===

"Well, I can say that there are definitely two things that will never happen. 1) Banner ads. 2) Oracle [a completely new database system.] And a third is a total replacement [of the current damaged system.] Don’t have the financial wherewithal."

"To those who wish to leave because of it, see ya."

"If FR dies, that’s that."

Hey, you want us to get an all new system with all new software and add a few more pricey techs, system programmers and database administrators to keep it all working 100% of the time 24/7/365? Well, start coughing up the big bucks.

It’s going to take tens of thousands of donations and many with at least three zeros each after the comma to accomplish the task. And that would be EVERY month like clock work to make the payroll. Once you take on a big load of expensive overhead, there’s no going back. As it is, we get a couple thousand donations per quarter averaging about $30 bucks each and there’s no guarantees we can cover this quarter’s expenses much less next quarter. We’re on a pay as we go system and we have zero employees. We just ask for enough to pay the bills.

Throwing more money at the problem won’t solve it. [This latest glitch] was a technical issue and we just had to keep troubleshooting until we found it. And no, we’re not going to invite a bunch of strangers in to get their hands on our secure systems. John has been programming since he was 14 and he’s pushing 40 now. He built these systems and he’s an expert in them.

And no, we are not going to throw out our software and rewrite it and no we’re not going to move on to some other database system. There are no guarantees that any other system can do a better job and not without hiring a staff to build and maintain it and that’s for sure. And we don’t have the financial wherewithal to do any of that anyway. Maybe if we had a couple million bucks at our disposal and a couple years to do it in we could build an iron-clad system. And maybe not.

All I can say is, if someone else can do it better and cheaper, then please step right on up and get ‘er done!! I’ll bow out and retire. Thankyouverymuch.

Hit it boys:

https://secure.freerepublic.com/donate/

And no, we have no plans of taking FR commercial. I like it the way it is. Not sure I could handle getting rich.

I can relate having programmed for about 35 years, always build from scratch, build it to last, not to throw away and start over every couple of years. My only suggestion is to stay the heck away from Oracle.

Amen to that. Oracle appears to me to be just a big labor intensive waste of time. We have systems that will only run on it after being told that the purpose of relational databases was portability. Now can only use oracle with certain system. Just ignorance wanting to go that direction.

You can have “Link Unit” ads which have no graphics and are very unobtrusive. You can filter them to exclude domains or types of ads.

I think it would solve the problem.

However, there are plenty of religious forums on the internet where those who seem to exist only for religious controversy and doctrinal dueling can post their piety or prejudices to their hearts' content.

Bravo!

If I were creating a website it would be with the database Firebird which is free for commercial use.

http://www.firebirdsql.org/

2nd choice would be postgresql: http://www.postgresql.org/

3d choice would be php, Mysql.

I just wanted to note on this thread that “legacy” threads from before some time in 2001 still are unavailable. I’ve never had any word on whether they are gone forever, or might be resurrected at some point.

An example:

The Perl is, to my understanding, working against a database, so I have no thought that the old posts should be deprecated. A record is a record is a record. If it is MySQL, I might suggest a port to SQL -- retaining the old record structure -- since Microsoft's ODBC connector has unnecessary overhead, and I believe any robust Microsoft application runs natively against SQL much better.

Gzip or Deflate are HTTP compression modules which allow your browswer to download a websites data more quickly.

Here is a primer on it from Yahoo.

I don't have any insider information at all. I'm just a peon FReeper who wants FR to continue on into the future even better than it is now. And I'm not rich enough to donate the big bucks so I'm doing the only thing I can think of and that's getting the word out, plain and simple.

The fundamental problem is that the company placing the ad would be firebombed by leftist zealots

On a related note. FR has been telling certain groups that they are not welcome. I wonder what impact that has on the length of time the fund raisers run.

We’ve been stuck on 12% for a while.

Regardless of the intent to keep things the way the owner wants, some of the hands that have been bitten did feed FR.

If everyone who comes here regularly paid their share then how much would that be? How much do we need?

I give $30/month - sure doesn’t seem like much for what I get in return. I don’t subscribe to any newspapers or magazines anymore.

On that note, of late there seems to have been a number of Mormon - Christian dogfights bleeding over into News / Activism.

I think each person who posts should get a star by their name for donation.

Hmmm? Hall of shame.

Maybe that isn’t such a bad idea, the more you contribute the bigger the stars or some kind of indicator as to your level of support, a little competition so to speak.

Another way to recognize possible TROLLS, and another way of telling who’s who. I like it. Possibly generating twice the present level of contributions.

Up to the owner though.
