"If FR dies, that’s that." - Jim Robinson [Jim's reply at post # 588]

FYI -

Here are statements from Jim about the future of FreeRepublic.com for those who missed them. They are quite serious.

===

"Well, I can say that there are definitely two things that will never happen. 1) Banner ads. 2) Oracle [a completely new database system.] And a third is a total replacement [of the current damaged system.] Don’t have the financial wherewithal."

"To those who wish to leave because of it, see ya."

"If FR dies, that’s that."

===

[To: paulycy]

Hey, you want us to get an all new system with all new software and add a few more pricey techs, system programmers and database administrators to keep it all working 100% of the time 24/7/365? Well, start coughing up the big bucks.

It’s going to take tens of thousands of donations and many with at least three zeros each after the comma to accomplish the task. And that would be EVERY month like clock work to make the payroll. Once you take on a big load of expensive overhead, there’s no going back. As it is, we get a couple thousand donations per quarter averaging about $30 bucks each and there’s no guarantees we can cover this quarter’s expenses much less next quarter. We’re on a pay as we go system and we have zero employees. We just ask for enough to pay the bills.

Throwing more money at the problem won’t solve it. [This latest glitch] was a technical issue and we just had to keep troubleshooting until we found it. And no, we’re not going to invite a bunch of strangers in to get their hands on our secure systems. John has been programming since he was 14 and he’s pushing 40 now. He built these systems and he’s an expert in them.

And no, we are not going to throw out our software and rewrite it and no we’re not going to move on to some other database system. There are no guarantees that any other system can do a better job and not without hiring a staff to build and maintain it and that’s for sure. And we don’t have the financial wherewithal to do any of that anyway. Maybe if we had a couple million bucks at our disposal and a couple years to do it in we could build an iron-clad system. And maybe not.

All I can say is, if someone else can do it better and cheaper, then please step right on up and get ‘er done!! I’ll bow out and retire. Thankyouverymuch.

Hit it boys:

https://secure.freerepublic.com/donate/

And no, we have no plans of taking FR commercial. I like it the way it is. Not sure I could handle getting rich.

Does anyone have stats on number of users, bandwidth load et cetera?

The last thing that I read a few years ago was 20,000 daily posters. Bandwidth I don't know but we get more hits than MSNBC.

To further explain my rebuttal - the content of the site has already been influenced significantly by posters who don't contribute financially. Therefore, it might be counterproductive to leave them out of such discussions, since you may eliminate part of what encourages the rest of us to pay.

Actually I'd like to see a study on that. I tend to think many of the FReepers I encounter on my visits tend to be contributors. And ping to post 391 if you missed it.

Some of us contribute regularly even though we get flamed
regularly. That is just part of life. As long as I can speak my mind, I’ll contribute. I don’t expect others to
consider every word out of my mouth to be pure gold.

Think of the celebrations that would be happening in DU land if FR goes under...

There is some information provided on the Home Page:

The reason FR has an impact is because ANYONE can come here and read the truth. That will not happen with a closed board.

Hey, DJ. Regarding Proud's suggestion. The site wouldn't be closed to anyone. Anyone could still come here and read for free. Anyone could still sign up for free and post to their heart's content.

What Proud is suggesting, is that JimRob allow banner ads that paid members would not see. Only unpaid members would see the ads on their screen.

I think it's a brilliant and conservative solution to FR's funding issues.

Personally, I love the format of FR. Maybe it’s my many years of reading rec.motorcycles.harley over on Usenet, but I find simple text the best way to run a discussion forum.

If you aren’t already on the monthly donor track, get there! (note to all)

Jim: I really like the idea to put some sort of indicator on the posts of monthly donors ($5 minimum perhaps). I think it would promote more monthly donors and make your job easier.

Well, I love to bash Java (the language) because it’s a huge pile of bureaucracy. If I want to get anything done on it, it’s 20 minutes to solve the problem in paper, a couple days to get it “just fine” under Java-lang.

Just curious as to what kind of applications you write with Java?

Is there anything fund-wise which would make FR either more or less vulnerable to government intrustion?

FR is targeted because it is so necessary. No place is perfect or even CAN be perfect, just as none of us is perfect. But we do what we can, to the best of our ability. And what FR contributes is absolutely critical for allowing conservatives to collect, capture, and dispense important information. We get so frustrated when FR is down because we know how much we rely on it and how critical its function is.

We cannot let FR slip away.

My husband is already fed up with the amount of time I spend on research, but I will see if I can talk him into letting me contribute. If everybody gives something we can do this.

I’ve watched it for 12 years as it has degenerated into hatefulness, name-calling, nastiness and division among freepers

Another thing that has caused me to feel unwelcome here is the proliferation of threads of older women seducing young boys, then numerous juvenile freepers chime in applauding the event. I find those people to be disgusting and reprehensible.

Weeeeeelllll. I see it as more software to “go bad”. We already have to deal with attacks and the normal breakdown of equipment and software. It’s one more feature to go wrong.

You’re just proving the evidence that other posters have said when they talk about the rudeness that has overtaken FR. FR has be one the “Get off Ma Lawn!!” forum of the Internet.

(waits for insults)

If I ran a conservative forum, there would be an ongoing virtual book club in which we discussed the works of the great conservative authors.... Kirk, Hayek, Kendall, von Mises, Voegelin, Strauss.

Participation would be mandatory.

Mention a book by a radio talk host? ZZzzzzzzzott!!

Thank you.

I sincerely hope the powers that be are reading and paying attention to this thread. There are options out there worth exploring. This thread could be a springboard for a better FR.
