Here are statements from Jim about the future of FreeRepublic.com for those who missed them. They are quite serious.
"Well, I can say that there are definitely two things that will never happen. 1) Banner ads. 2) Oracle [a completely new database system.] And a third is a total replacement [of the current damaged system.] Dont have the financial wherewithal."
"To those who wish to leave because of it, see ya."
"If FR dies, thats that."
Hey, you want us to get an all new system with all new software and add a few more pricey techs, system programmers and database administrators to keep it all working 100% of the time 24/7/365? Well, start coughing up the big bucks.
Its going to take tens of thousands of donations and many with at least three zeros each after the comma to accomplish the task. And that would be EVERY month like clock work to make the payroll. Once you take on a big load of expensive overhead, theres no going back. As it is, we get a couple thousand donations per quarter averaging about $30 bucks each and theres no guarantees we can cover this quarters expenses much less next quarter. Were on a pay as we go system and we have zero employees. We just ask for enough to pay the bills.
Throwing more money at the problem wont solve it. [This latest glitch] was a technical issue and we just had to keep troubleshooting until we found it. And no, were not going to invite a bunch of strangers in to get their hands on our secure systems. John has been programming since he was 14 and hes pushing 40 now. He built these systems and hes an expert in them.
And no, we are not going to throw out our software and rewrite it and no were not going to move on to some other database system. There are no guarantees that any other system can do a better job and not without hiring a staff to build and maintain it and thats for sure. And we dont have the financial wherewithal to do any of that anyway. Maybe if we had a couple million bucks at our disposal and a couple years to do it in we could build an iron-clad system. And maybe not.
All I can say is, if someone else can do it better and cheaper, then please step right on up and get er done!! Ill bow out and retire. Thankyouverymuch.
Hit it boys:
And no, we have no plans of taking FR commercial. I like it the way it is. Not sure I could handle getting rich.

I have no doubt.
Having said that, I am still waiting for Jim Rob to have an iphone app. Sheesh! /s :-)
What? You've never posted a vanity? You've been here over 10 years. I'm calling for you to post one right now. USE LOTS OF CAPS. And Exclamation Marks!!!!!!
(you ought to know how - you're a tenured FReeper)
I like that idea.
Could make a big difference in donations, too.
I wonder what a petition of many hundred FREEPERS to him might result in.
Perhaps included in the petition could be a request for super top flight hardware upgrades as his gift to FR?
well, I wasn’t saying all that for sympathy or thanks...just trying to prove a point....we all have our demons to deal with and I have 2 healthy children so I am thankful for that and yea, it’s a hard time right now, but it could be worse....
God is good and he never promised that road would be an easy one....makes you appreciate when times are prosperous for sure...I have learned to be FRUGAL...LOL...
Bless you all!

That would be awesome!
Java is not about the Java language itself, it's about the JVM. And the fact is, Java JVMs have been getting faster and faster. Also new languages, like Scala and Groovy can run on the JVM. I know people just love to bash Java, solely because it's the big dog. Syntactically, I prefer other languages, but the fact is, almost any problem that needs to be solved, has probably already been solved in the Java space, and has been used across many enterprises.
Hey, Leni, I’m fee to be anal retentive if I want to be. /s
Having said that, I do understand your chief complaint.
>> “I think he should charge money. It’s a free country and if we want this service I’d be willing to pay $30 per year or $58 for two year subscription.” <<
How generous of you...
I think you’re right.
Sad to say, I fear that Kirk would be considered an "elitist" today and would be persona non grata on a site where the likes of Savage and Hannity are held to be great writers.
Wwaahhhhhh. You’re phone comment is stupid <-——— that’s what you sound like.
That’s right, I musta been thinking of tuba players.
She was the seer in the first "Matrix." I always wondered about the obvious symbolism of having her in what looked like a housing project.
Never think of tuba player. Trust me on this.
Seemed like “the one” also lived in a project...
Does anyone have stats on number of users, bandwidth load et cetera?
I wanna go to your church.
