Here are statements from Jim about the future of FreeRepublic.com for those who missed them. They are quite serious.
"Well, I can say that there are definitely two things that will never happen. 1) Banner ads. 2) Oracle [a completely new database system.] And a third is a total replacement [of the current damaged system.] Dont have the financial wherewithal."
"To those who wish to leave because of it, see ya."
"If FR dies, thats that."
Hey, you want us to get an all new system with all new software and add a few more pricey techs, system programmers and database administrators to keep it all working 100% of the time 24/7/365? Well, start coughing up the big bucks.
Its going to take tens of thousands of donations and many with at least three zeros each after the comma to accomplish the task. And that would be EVERY month like clock work to make the payroll. Once you take on a big load of expensive overhead, theres no going back. As it is, we get a couple thousand donations per quarter averaging about $30 bucks each and theres no guarantees we can cover this quarters expenses much less next quarter. Were on a pay as we go system and we have zero employees. We just ask for enough to pay the bills.
Throwing more money at the problem wont solve it. [This latest glitch] was a technical issue and we just had to keep troubleshooting until we found it. And no, were not going to invite a bunch of strangers in to get their hands on our secure systems. John has been programming since he was 14 and hes pushing 40 now. He built these systems and hes an expert in them.
And no, we are not going to throw out our software and rewrite it and no were not going to move on to some other database system. There are no guarantees that any other system can do a better job and not without hiring a staff to build and maintain it and thats for sure. And we dont have the financial wherewithal to do any of that anyway. Maybe if we had a couple million bucks at our disposal and a couple years to do it in we could build an iron-clad system. And maybe not.
All I can say is, if someone else can do it better and cheaper, then please step right on up and get er done!! Ill bow out and retire. Thankyouverymuch.
Hit it boys:
And no, we have no plans of taking FR commercial. I like it the way it is. Not sure I could handle getting rich.

You can debate that if you want, but from a private company customer service viewpoint, is the direction I think Jim needs to consider.
And I thought I had clarified I recognized the government grant issue with PBS as one of the differences.
The fact remains FR is a private company and it needs to make money right now. FReepathons and begging don’t seem to be enough.
They don't even like my sense of humor... what's up with that? ;)
To be fair, normalization is a method and a premise used by any database administrator. Third Normal Form normalization is recommended for any database. I can accomplish 3NF without Oracle, in SQL, just by how I declare my database.
I miss them. I should have copied some of them for reference. It bugs me when I see us forgetting that something has all been done before and not that long ago.
I agree!! Politics and religion don't mix.
Didn't it occur to you that that is WHY there's a RF?
Perhaps the RF could be restricted to prayer requests and devotionals. One per day per devotional.
“My suggestion is to allow a newbie to sign up and participate for a probation period. At the end of the period they can have the option to subscribe to maintain privileges or go to read only.”
I just don't understand that! ;-)
Now if you crap on Jim's carpet...step in it..and track it all over the house...you probably ain't gonna live long here.
My guess is you just want some/any excuse to NOT donate.
You make no sense....
For the benefit of us “newbies,” what’s a legacy thread?
Clearly you have an agenda, you are a troll. I hope you get the zot for being annoying.
You done farted in Church.
Praying 2011 will bring prosperity your way.
Besides, posting here on a iPhone is a HUGE pain
So, you can afford an iPhone, the internet connection, and refuse to contribute to a forum on which you participate?
If you don't feel like this is your forum, why FReeplaod?
Maybe we can start a whole new fundraising conspiracy thread.
For example: Does it really take that much money to run FR? And if so, can Jim stop eating to cut costs. LOL!
phones are for talking
keyboards are for typing
..shuffling off to my dinosaur lunch
Frankly, I have had it with the LDS who are blackmailing JR and withholding donations because he doesn’t allow their prostlytizing to go unchallenged.
This is a Free Republic and the RF was created to keep religious topics (which can get heated) out of news/activism.
Every day I am attacked for speaking the truth, posting LDS sources, and telling of my experiences and the LDS want to shut us down.
Every day MY faith is attacked (Threads like “Joseph Smith: Apostle of Jesus Christ” and individual posts) yet I STILL donate and will continue to do so.
Thank you JR for all you do and for allowing free speech (both sides).
Works for me if a subscription means that the subscriber has the right to post for as long as he or she has subscribed.
I'm not sure Jim wants to go there.
Rove is an outcast because Rove is a RINO a**HOLE and no other reason.
Don’t know much about Mormonism, do you?
