MM, I agree with your description. However, what I was responding to was a statement of how free the US was 70 years ago or so. Even though the worst that our Japanese had to experience was forced removal from homes, thousands of dollars of personal and business loss, locked up in camps with inadequate heating, blankets, etc. in winter, and a generally miserable existence, this does not compare with a deliberate campaign of wholesale murder. On the other hand, I don’t consider that as a particularly FREE period, either. Also, my father was constantly facing the draft, a denial of freedom which no longer exists.

Regarding sons in war, my son’s company of the 82nd airborne was “on mission” in August of 1990 when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. For two days I tried desperately to reach him by the Ft. Bragg public telephone number. The line was always busy. Then there was no answer, they were all gone, on their way to Saudi Arabia. A small group of 2,000 or so who with the Saudi military were facing Iraqs more than 100,000 battle experienced troops across the desert. They sat (thank God) from August 1990 to Jan. 1991, when the counterattack began. His group was in Iraq a day before the general public information about the start of the land war. About 3 months before Bush II invaded Iraq, I asked him how many troops he thought would be needed to successful conclude the invasion. He said about 450,000. Bush sent under 200,000. After a year Bush’s guy Bremmer(sp?) said we should have had 500,000.

*Your memory is pretty good except that they weren’t “concentration camps” a la the Nazi or Russian/Communist style.*

Um, a concentration camp is a concentration camp is a concentration camp.

Sure, we had no labor or extermination camps, but we sure did have concentration camps.

This country hasn’t been free since Woodrow Wilson was elected, in my opinion.

OH,1861, that great year when several million people in this country were slaves, and could be whipped, branded, hunted with dogs, dragged back from free states if they succeeded in escaping their imprisonment, have their wives and children sold away without any recourse, etc. And, of course, women could NOT vote. And, were there still property requirements for voting? I am so glad this has always been a free country. NOT!! Oh, wait, I guess it was free for about 20% of the population, maybe?

We incarcerated an entire people, because of something that happened in Hawaii.

- something that happened in Peru convinced FDR about the camps. Peru had serious problems with espionage from Peruvian Japanese.

You are a moron.

The Founders didn't want women , those under 21 , non property owners, and imbeciles to vote, that's why they left it up to the states to set the requirements for who gets to vote, and the States followed the Founders lead and didn't expand the franchise.

4 Amendments and Motor Voter later, guess which groups now have the vote and regularly exercise it to put Communists in power?

As far as the slaves, seems the tables have been turned.

Try not paying the IRS and see what happens to you, I'd rather take my chances with the dogs.

Seems like the descendants of the slaves are the masters now, just voting themselves more and more of the guy in the big houses money, who is under penalty of imprisonment for non-compliance.

John Adams to James Sullivan on the suffrage (1776)

The same reasoning which will induce you to admit all men who have no property, to vote, with those who have . . . will prove that you ought to admit women and children; for, generally speaking, women and children have as good judgments, and as independent minds, as those men who are wholly destitute of property. . . . Depend upon it, Sir, it is dangerous to open so fruitful a source of controversy and altercation as would be opened by attempting to alter the qualifications of voters; there will be no end of it. New claims will arise; women will demand the vote; lads from twelve to twenty-one will think their rights not enough attended to; and every man who has not a farthing, will demand an equal voice with any other, in all acts of state. It tends to confound and destroy all distinctions, and prostrate all ranks to one common level.

So much for free speech. What about when all the libtards created and said all those anti Bush things during the Bush years?

Yeah...He backed down:
R. Lee Ermey
A Message from the Gunny

"I recently appeared at a fundraising event designed to collect toys and raise awareness for
underprivileged children. While that event succeeded in raising thousands of dollars and hundreds
of toys for this cause, I regret that I delivered a monologue that was inappropriately critical
of the President. I was trying to be entertaining and simply went too far in this instance.
I am mindful that my success as an entertainer relates in part to my experience in
the Marine Corps, my devotion to its members, and the deep respect I have for members of all our Armed Forces.
My comments should not be seen as reflecting on them or their views.
I was just very disappointed in the amount of success that we were having raising toys and money for
the underprivileged children this season. The poor economy has greatly hampered our
efforts. My comments were misguided, and emotionally based, and for that I am truly sorry."

Semper Fi

Quite the "entertainer."

“So if anyone ever wonders if a potential threat to the President goes unnoticed...”

B.S.

Couple years ago I saw an interview with that kingsize jackass LeBron James in which he was asked who he’d most like “to dunk over.”

Kingsize jackass said he’d like to bring down the rim on George W. Bush.

Of course that was reported in light of James’ failure ever to get it up at all in games or situations of any consequence.

Maybe the Secret Service knows Kong James ain’t gonna get it done.

You are correct! I know a couple of these guys personally and they are as conservative as they come. They aren’t protecting Obama, they are protecting the President. That is there job. Are all of them conservative? I doubt it, but the ones I know don’t care for his policies any more than you or I.

I'm 65 years old and I believe I could best the wimp obama in a fisticuff contest in the ring. This is not a threat, just an opinion. How is that any different than saying, "I believe I could beat him playing hoops"? They are both sports, neither normally winds up with one participant dying.

The S.S. (How appropriate initials) are going way over board with this threat business.

Remember when he got elected and was walking in the parade? There was an armored personnel carrier in line behind the limo. on top was a soldier and what looked like a .50 caliber machine gun.

I am a moron?

Apparently you were too stupid to follow the flow of my comments and responses to those comments to realize that my point is that in the past we were not more free than we are today. With your argument that the Founders didn’t want women, those under 21, non property owners, and imbecils to vote, not to mention all the slave blacks, you have simply proved my argument.

Except for imbeciles, there is no reason the other categories should not have the right to vote. So there certainly is a lot more freedom today than there was in 1861, or in 1781. Learn to read before you confirm your own stupidity. I suspect the many women here at FR would also consider your statements pretty moronic.

“As far as the slaves, seems the tables have been turned.

That reminds me. I heard on the news that Tax Day was being put off from April 15th to the following Monday (I think) - as the 15th will be a holiday in recognition of, wait for it.....The Emancipation Act. I saw that on the news and had to laugh.

The following is from some tax website. I tried to search FR for an article on this.:

*The traditional tax return filing deadline is April 15 of each year, but the IRS has approved April 18, 2011 as the tax filing deadline for 2010 Tax Returns and extension requests in observation of Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia.
