Re: "Dharma and Greg" - Oh heck yes. I noticed the same thing. In fact, any time Hollywierd portrays hippies, they are always good guys.

Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Geez... I remember Scotts Valley when there were only about fifteen houses, one service station and a defunct Santa's Village there.

Times have changed.

"In her characteristically powerful way, she was respecting and supporting their lifestyle choice. She was enjoying their company purely for what they had to offer...

Do you think drugs might have been involved?

One is the daughter, and the other the mother? They both look 17 in that photo.

I thought the daughter looked a bit rough for a 17 year old teenager. Getting wasted with homeless twentysomething year olds will do that to you.

Martinez's parents said she was not homeless. Her father said she had moved to New Orleans to live with her mother. Her mother said she had a home there and had spent four years in that city.

your hatred for a 17 year old girl is probably misdirected.

I agree. This girl could have been exactly as described but there are also some disturbing points to consider.

An animal lover, she envisioned herself traveling overseas to help in animal rescue efforts.

That describes someone with a soft heart and a sense of adventure and independence. It does not necessarily mean she is a hippie whore on drugs.

Snook described her daughter as "a beautiful artist and poet," "incredibly intelligent and a straight A student," "a hero to her younger brother" and "a strong guiding light in the storms flooding her loved ones' lives."

That does not describe a druggie.

She had been recovering from "an immeasurably traumatic and nearly destructive experience," which led her to reach out to close friends, according to her mother.

Possibly a rape which would be traumatic to any woman but even more so to a naive, trusting, vulnerable young woman.

"These people became her stable support system until two years ago when she was ready to seek help from her close family," she added. "Her ability to prevail in the wake of these difficult times as a stronger, more beautiful, loving and forgiving person was something I will forever honor."

She had been in New Orleans for four years, meaning since she was 13, and apparently on her own even then. Two years ago things had become so bad she turned to her family, perhaps for money, but her "stable support system" was her equally young and directionless friends.

This seems to me a complete abdication of responsibility by her parents. They wanted to be supportive and not be bossy. In other words they wanted to be her buds rather than her parents. They wanted her to like them. As a result, they inadvertently threw her to the wolves. That is not to say the other kids were bad. That is only to say a bunch of kids should not be own their own in any city.

Yet, before completely condemning the parents, we should consider that Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Airlines, Virgin Records, etc., said that when he was four his mother, his parents were wealthy, took him to the opposite side of London and left him there to make it home on his own. To complicate matters he didn't even know where he lived.

This particular problem came to light recently but it exists all over the country and has for a long time. Runaways are a very vulnerable group and there are many wolves out there. Once a child reaches the teen years, unless they have been given a very firm foundation of morals and responsibility, their peers have more influence with them than their parents. They are also entering their second stage of establishing their independence as individuals. The first stage is the terrible twos. Some easily fall in with the wrong crowd and do drugs, alcohol, and other destructive things. Yet, a few, perhaps like this girl, don't.

She wasn't killed living in a crack house. Many adults each year die from similar carbon monoxide and fire related events. Often in their own homes.

Some Freepers, in their attempt to be street wise and worldly, are missing the point.
