Mauritanian laws are based on Sharia law and the penal code forbids relationships between both sexes outside marriage. That includes a consensual relationship between a boyfriend and girlfriend but can also criminalize a woman who is forced to have sex.

Sidi Athman Ould Sidi Salem, a law specialist and legal adviser to the government, said: "If raped women don't bring strong evidence, which is not easy, they would be accused of Zina -- an Arabic word meaning sex out of marriage -- and end up in jail. It's because the victims of rape are always accused of a Zina which make a lot of problems."

I've always wondered why the left seems to embrace Islamic causes, since if Islam had ascendency:

• Their woman constituency would be oppressed and treated like animals.
• Their gay constituency would be outlawed and oppressed.
• Their drug-oriented constituency would be killed, and even those who like alcohol would be imprisoned.
• The secular bent of most of their groups would be outlawed, they would be mandatorily forced into religion.

Everytime a Muslim murders someone with a religious motivation, it’s ‘mental illness’ not Islam.

The left embraces islam precisely because of the items you list. It’s never been about freedom and equality with the left. It has ALWAYS been about CONTROL, and all four of your bullet points shout CONTROL.

I think the reason is twofold: First, Islamic is anti-Western establishment. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." Second, the left thinks they are so smart, that to use the Chinese phrase, they think they can ride the tiger, and get off when convenient without being turned upon and eaten.
