Reagan Aide Perle: START 'Seriously Flawed'

Instead of pressuring reluctant Republican senators for rapid ratification of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia, the Obama administration should just drop it, says Richard Perle, a key architect of President Ronald Reagan’s strategy to end the Cold War.

“It’s a seriously flawed treaty,” Perle, now a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, says during an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV. “It’s certainly not the kind of treaty Ronald Reagan fought for and accomplished.”

The pact is very weak on verification, he says. “For example, our right to inspections is limited to sites the Russians declare . . . which makes a mockery of the whole idea of on-site inspections,” Perle explains. “Imagine when Iran asserts a similar right to limit inspections, or the North Koreans or others. For that reason alone, it’s a very doubtful agreement.”

Plenty of time is needed to examine the treaty. “That won’t be done if they vote immediately,” he notes. “The Senate has never seen the full negotiating record on the treaty.”

That’s because the Obama administration doesn’t want a serious examination of the dispute between the United States and Russia over ballistic missile defense, Perle says.

The Obama administration essentially has handed Russia a veto over our missile defense program, Perle says. “At any point they can say we don’t like what you’re doing, you’re putting us in a position where we’ll walk away from this treaty. I think this president would back down under those circumstances.”

A close examination of all this is vital, but the White House refuses to turn over the negotiating records, says Perle, who was President Ronald Reagan’s assistant defense secretary.

The Ruskies are laughing at the stupidity of the “leadership” or lack of leadership, of this country. We’re skrewed.

The Ruskies are laughing at us because they know darn well they are gonna walk away from this TREATY "IF" the US attempts missile defense. Why would the Congress ratify a treaty when they have not even peeked at the negotiation minutes? Huh? Because the Kenyan made side deals and told the Ruskies not to worry -"we are never going to deploy missile defenses or if we do you can walk away." Of course by then we will have destroyed how many of our nukes? How much will we have spent on weapon renewal? Nukes have a shelf life.

THIS IS THE FIRST TREATY IN THE HISTORY OF THE USA RATIFIED BY A LAME DUCK SENATE.

“Scowcroft is a very prominent Realist”

Scowcroft?!? oh puleeeze. Neither prominent nor someone to look up to. Just like Kissinger sucking up to China and finding out he was on a consulting gig, this ‘argument by authority is hollow. And just like other RINO suspects, wheeled out by media only to advance the liberal agenda.

This START is NOT like the other START treaties, and Russia is NOT the superpower it was in 1990. Pretending they are is dumb. The other deals didnt tie out hands vs our real threat with missile defense limits, this does. Obama is a lousy negotiator and cut a bad deal (even the libs have noticed that by now!) It’s extraneous and unnecessary and of no use to US national security.

Do you look up to Gates on DADT advice too? Look to Powell on affirmative action? Take elder Bush’s advice on GOP primary candidates? Then why follow them on START?

The Realists, including Baker at State, Scowcroft as NSA, Gates as Scowcroft's deputy, Condi Rice as Scowcroft's protege', Powell as joint chief, all supporting the treaty.

I hope you're being sarcastic.

Why the hell are we entering a treaty on nuclear arms with a nation that simply cannot do anything more to build up their side of the equation and has no intention of giving up what they have left?

And that is no threat to attack us in any case?

But of course they’ll be only too happy to take back control of eastern Europe and here is yet another step up that stairway.

Palin thinks a lot like Reagan:

“At the height of the Cold War, President Reagan pursued missile defense while also pursuing verifiable arms control with the then-Soviet Union. That position was right in the 1980’s, and it is still right today.

We cannot and must not give up the right to missile defense to protect our population – whether the missiles that threaten us come from Russia, Iran, China, North Korea, or anywhere else. I fought the Obama administration’s plans to cut funds for missile defense in Alaska while I was Governor, and I will continue to speak out for missile defenses that will protect our people and our allies.”
