(AP) Republican Mark Kirk broke with his majority of his party Saturday to support repeal of the dont ask, dont tell policy on gays in the military, casting one of the first high-profile votes hes faced as Illinois junior senator.
The Senate voted 65-31 to let gays serve openly in the military. President Barack Obama was expected to sign the legislation next week, although the change wouldnt take immediate effect. The House had passed an identical version of the bill, 250-175, on Wednesday.
Kirk was one of six Republicans to break ranks. The move was a reversal for him after hed earlier helped block repeal legislation. A spokesman said as recently as two days ago that Kirk was still undecided on the issue.

Another useless bum. He needs to be defeated in 2016. If by a Dem, then so be it. Better an enemy in front of us than a traitor behind us.
Where are all the Mark Kirk bootlickers now?!?!
Hmm, McCain did stand against this one though, and one’s dislike of him is nearly legendary..:D
Burr is the one who surprised me, 6 yrs may seem an eternity in political time, it is not for me, I live to see him booted out on his opportunistic silken clad behind.
So it wasn't even close. Disappointing.
Every Repub who voted for this needs to be targeted and removed, whatever the cost. This was an important call, and anyone who got it wrong is not a Repub. Or if they are, I'm not.
Sen. Richard Burr (N.C.)
Sen. John Ensign (Nev.)
Sen. Mark Kirk (Ill.)
Sen. Scott Brown (Mass.)
Sen. George Voinovich (Ohio)
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska)
Sen. Olympia Snowe (Maine)
Sen. Susan Collins (Maine)
These people disgust me.
Murkowski voted FOR the Dream Act also. Why is she still a Republican?
I suspect that she will be even more liberal now than she was before the 2010 election, she’s going to be giving Snowe and Collins a run for their money as to who is the biggest RINO.
We’ve located eight Repubs who are actually even worse than McCain. Who let them in? Who are they working for, since it clearly isn’t us?
Check out these archived articles at HillBuzz, I remember reading a good one about 2 months ago about Kirk.
May explain why he voted this way!
This leftist Rhino is a disaster.
Me too. Why do they call themselves Republicans?
Most of Kirk's groupies have been hiding in shame since their guy was sworn in, but one of them is STILL on here pimping for the guy -- even defending Kirk when he betrayed on us permanent tax cuts, the ONE issue Kirk claimed be solidly in the conservative camp!
I'm not sure which is worse, Kirk or his "conservative" apologists.
how did Kirk vote on Dream?
The fact of the matter is that the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy was the camel’s nose under the tent. An open homo policy became inevitable once the compromise of DADT was enacted into law. Pretty soon we will see gay marriage among troops. Indeed, under this new policy, a soldier can now get married in Vermont to to a same sex partner and then force the military to let his husband live with him on the military housing.
DADT was the first step. This is the next. Frankly I am not at all optimistic about the future of our nation. We are Sodom and Gomorrah.
“Kirk votes to support repeal of military gay ban”
That’s because he’s one of them.
