John McCain at his fieriest before 'don't ask, don't tell' vote (McLame throws temper tantrum)
The Washington Post ^ | 2010-12-18 | Dana Milbank

Posted on 12/18/2010 10:02:21 PM PST by rabscuttle385

(snip)

Saturday's debate on the repeal of the "don't-ask-don't-tell" policy was only half an hour old when the Arizona Republican burst onto the floor from the cloakroom, hiked up his pants and stalked over to his friend Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). Ignoring Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), who had the floor, McCain hectored the men noisily for a few moments, waving his arms for emphasis.

When McCain finally stormed off, Durbin shook his head in exasperation and Lieberman smiled. A minute later, McCain returned - he had apparently remembered another element of his grievance - and resumed his harangue.

It turns out McCain's fury was stirred by a trifle - he had wanted more time for the debate, which the Democrats eventually gave him - but that was typical. It doesn't take much to set off McCain these days.

(snip)

McCain famously said in 2006 that he would support repeal once military leaders recommended it. Instead, he led the opposition to repeal. McCainologists in the Capitol speculate that on this and other issues he's driven less by policy consideration than by personal animosity. A decade ago, his antipathy toward President George W. Bush led him to seek common cause with Democrats to thwart a Republican president. Now his antipathy toward President Obama has made him a leading Republican hardliner.

McCain has been right on about 80% of the issues during his time on the Hill, but the 20% he’s been wrong on he has been way wrong and he has gone so far as to rub people the wrong way on those issues. It’s just too bad, because in reality he supports most of what we support.

Two things come to mind that lord McCain has been 'right' about in the past dozen years. Picking Sarah as veep running mate and this vote, albeit very late in the process. So I think you are trolling.

I don’t understand FReepers who continue to attack the senator even when he makes the right votes. It makes no sense.

Simple. We don't trust him.

And we have good reason not to trust him. His political history defines him as an opportunist who will turn on a dime and attack conservatives if there is a political advantage to be had for McCain.

In the meantime, I'm happy to have his support. But I dare not count on it.

“I don’t understand FReepers who continue to attack the senator even when he makes the right votes.”

I agree with you. They claim they attack McCain because he is not conservative on some issues, then when he IS standing up for conservative issues, they attack him, applaud the liberals’ attack on him, while the same FReepers say nothing about the traitor Republicans who voted with the Democrats. It does make you wonder...

From the article: “Earlier in the week, he (McCain) was observed in the unseemly act of publicly gloating on the Senate floor over his success in killing a massive spending bill. He’s also been raising hurdles to the ratification of the Obama administration’s nuclear arms treaty with Russia. At the same time, he led the opposition Saturday to repealing the ban on openly gay men and lesbians serving in the military - taking on Lieberman, who led the other side. “

Your thoughts were not real thoughtful if you could only think of 2 things he’s been right on in the last “dozen years.” I can think of more than 2 things this week he’s been right on. I’m not saying he’s perfect, far from it. Just giving him credit where credit is due. I’m not the one trolling.

From this article, interesting how now the press is ridiculing lord McCain for his 'antipathy' toward BamBamKennedy??? A decade ago, his antipathy toward President George W. Bush led him to seek common cause with Democrats to thwart a Republican president. Now his antipathy toward President Obama has made him a leading Republican hardliner.

I can only guess that you slept through all the two year old style temper tantrums old lord McCain threw... He slept with the left all through the Bush years and voted with them at every opportunity... And chances are we would not have obamination today had lord McCain literally been a conservative...

I’m scared that in 20 years...

It's true in some places today.

Well it is really hard to erase from the memory bank of lord McCain fishing for a place on the JFKerry presidential campaign. I despise him for his treatment of Rummy. He voted against making the Bush tax cuts permanent... snicker... we would not have had to deal with the liberals class warfare of 'rich' people getting tax cuts... Now I can go on and on and on about the past deeds of old lord McCain, but these few will stand the test of his supposed conservatism.

okie01: “Simple. We don’t trust him.”

Trust, but verify. It worked well for Reagan, and I believe it’s the proper approach toward RINOs.

I’m not talking about blind loyalty. We might find a better conservative to replace Senator McCain six years from now. What I mean is, we should applaud ANY senator, even Democrats, who vote to uphold constitutional and moral governance.

Trust, but verify.

I believe the verification has already been done.

McCain is not a reliable conservative and should not be viewed as one.

He's doing the right thing as of now -- and I'm grateful for that. But I'm not counting on him to continue that pattern in the future.

In the meantime, I'm not ragging on him like some others. But you asked the question. And you have your answer.

Pushing for the surge?
Leading opposition to the omnibus?

You clearly didn’t even read my post. I pretty much summarized much of what you have said in fewer words. I never said he was this super fantastic awesome guy. I just think it’s pretty stupid to say you can only think of 2 things he’s done right in 12 years. You are blinded by your hatred of him or have just been asleep for 12 years.

Oh he does take the credit for the surge, but how about the status of our military after the Clintons got finished gutting it? And Kosovo?

Lord McCain owed us at least a stand against the omnibus after his suspended presidential campaign which gave us TARP, and the endless promise during his campaign that he would 'name names' of the evil Wall Street profiteers.

I have no respect for him... maybe that means 'hate' to you, but more times than NOT he sleeps with the left, and is as responsible as any one other person for US having to go through this obamination.

Theory:

Rinos take turns backstabbing us, and pretending they “get it” so that we are constantly in flux about what to do about them.

Tit for tat is how you treat ‘em. 1 strike and yer out (you get “primaried”)!

My thoughts exactly! Does anyone really believe that McCain could raise a daughter and be married to a wife that so publicly defies what he claims to believe in on this issue, unless he decided there was benefit to them playing both sides against the middle?

The man is a complete narcissist and a consummate politician, and he doesn't just play one on TV!
