They used a missile on a balloon? Yeesh!!! Talk about overkill.
A half second of 20 mm cannon fire would have done the job just as well, and been a hell of a lot cheaper.

Seems like a few gun rounds would do it. Maybe they were worried about somebody popping up out of the basket and shooting at the jet when it got close enough, so they decided on a missile instead.
