Republicans could relinquish a significant portion of the gains they made in the midterm elections if they "allow" the omnibus spending bill to pass, Sen. John McCain said Wednesday.
The Arizona Republican said that Tea Party activists who helped the GOP make large inroads on Democrats are "enraged" about the $1.1 trillion measure to fund the government that contains nearly $8 billion in earmarks.
"They gave us a second chance last November ... And if we Republicans allow this thing to go through, then I'm not sure they're going to give us another chance," McCain said during an interview with Fox News's Sean Hannity.
McCain's comments put in stark relief the political dangers Republicans, and some Democrats, could face if the appropriations bill passes the Senate as is during the lame-duck session.
The 2008 GOP presidential nominee said there are five or six senators from his party who "may vote for it," leading him to say that the bill "may pass."
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) has introduced an alternative to the omnibus: a one-page continuing resolution that would fund the government until Feb. 18, at which point the new Congress could pass a comprehensive spending measure.
McCain also warned Democrats that they could feel voter backlash if they support the bill. Democrats must defend a whopping 23 Senate seats, some in swing and red states, in the 2012 elections.
The senator urged Tea Partiers to make their voices heard even louder against the bill.
"I was on the phone with the Tea Partiers all over Arizona today," he said. "They are enraged. They are outraged. I want to see an uprising all over this country from the same people who caused our [gains]."
Exactly. Thats what I want to see. Make them read it out loud.
And then explain to me, senators, why you didn't demand that they read the health bill before jamming it through unread.
Repubs should have made the decision that, during the lame duck session, "nothing" gets done. Nothing.
As bad as most of them are, the vast majority are (unfortunately) reelected.
Tell me about it - we have Mary Landrieu and New Orleans HAD Ray Nagan. They managed to get rid of one and got Cao (a big rhino). The other, Landrieu, is like bad grass.
McCain is considered a RINO by the TEA Party.
I have never been interested in any third party; I have tended to see them as a con game.
But if the Repubs cave this coming term, I will seriously consider it. There is a short list of constitutionalists, some in office, some out, who I will be watching. If they decide to go, I'll go too.
The GOP needs to understand that they are hanging by a thread here. They either learn to fight for their supposed principles, or prepare to be abandoned on the shelf of historical oddities, right next to the whigs. Not some day, but real soon.
Sen. McCain has always and I'm sure will always do what he thinks is best for the people he represents. As staunch conservatives we may disagree with him on some important issues.
On this issue he is right and we should support him. Would you rather throw your support behind the Bobbsie twins from Maine instead?
He did try too hard in the early part of this century to be moderate but he has heard the voice of the people in AZ and is working on their behalf now. Calling his constituents and responding to what they say. Not only that, he is speaking loud and clear in the national media about the dangers of this lame duck congress.
Now Freepers are hanging him out to dry because of his stance on amnesty which he himself has called a mistake.
This is not the time to alienate every single person from our ranks because they don't pass 100% of your litmus tests.
I did not vote for him in the primaries nor would I again, but he is correct in what he says here.
Didn’t that disaster pass 85-15 votes. I don’t think that we have 41 Republican RINOs. Only five voted no for the bill. Could it be that we only have 5 Conservative Senators?
That's the problem with government. Congress does what they think is best, irrespective of what the U.S. Constitution demands. Congress rules the people as their master rather than governs them as their servant.

Kerry was (and is) a despicable human being. Obama is even worse. And we have Republicans negotiating what personal lubricant will be used the next time they get raped by the DemonRAT Congress. The GOP is playing dangerously close to the edge of oblivion.

So, you would prefer that McCain not oppose this wasteful spending? Sen. McCain has been doing a better job representing the “tea party” view than most of the others in the Senate. Hate the guy if you want(which I think is pointless) but give the guy credit when he is right.
Speaking of Scott Brown, he will lose, I believe, in 2012 no matter how he votes on any bill hereinafter. So he will vote for his preferred liberalism. No surprise there

McCain, the Tea Party already rallied and affected a massive change in Washington. You already know where they stand. Why do they have to have tens of thousands of people rally every time there is legislation they oppose? That’s what you’re there for. To represent the will of the people. You already know their will. Just do your damn job McCain. Stop the showboating. We already know what a two faced phony you are!
