Senate Dems Unveil $1.1 TRILLION Spending Bill

Senate Democrats have filed a $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill that would fund the government through fiscal 2011. The 1924-page bill includes funding to implement the sweeping healthcare bill Congress passed earlier this year [ObamaCare]. The package drew swift rebuke from Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee. "This bill is loaded up with pork projects and should not get a vote. Congress should listen to the American people and stop this reckless spending," Thune said in a statement.

It was Obama who arrogantly said that "elections have consequences" as a justification for railroading through his socialist agenda. But apparently they have no consequences for Democrats who, disregarding the November elections, are prepared to ram ObamaCare and billions in pet pork projects through the lame-duck session. By the way, where is the Obama who has suddenly become alarmed at his own out-of-control spending that has sky-rocked our deficits and national debt? Not a peep! But who's really surprised at that? They next couple generations are already in hock and will be lucky if they can even pay the INTEREST on this debt. But the Dems are having a hell of a good time spending our money before the fiscal Titanic goes down! (Another nearly 2000 pages that won't be read!)

This can be officially called the Screw the people bill, the Democrats were voted out and they hadn’t put the budget in place back in September when the supposed to and the voters could punish or reward them. Now they put forth another monstosity 3 weeks from the new congress taking office.

Filibuster this turkey for 3 weeks if you have to. The Republicans in the House should do every procedural maneuver to slow down things in the House.

The bill includes $18 million for two nonprofits associated with deceased Democrats, the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and Rep. John P. Murtha; $349,000 for swine waste management in North Carolina; and $6 million for a rural Iowa school program named after Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa).

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) epitomizes the conflicted nature of the debate. Formerly a member of the committee that doles out earmarks, McConnell reluctantly embraced a moratorium on the practice last month to send a signal that Republicans are serious about curbing spending.

Yet the legislation includes provisions requested this year by McConnell, including $650,000 for a genetic technology center at the University of Kentucky, according to an analysis of the bill by Taxpayers for Common Sense, a nonpartisan watchdog.

Saying he was now “vigorously in opposition” to the legislation, McConnell said Tuesday that rushed consideration of the bill “here on Christmas Eve” compelled him to try to block the bill through a filibuster. “I’m going to vote against things that arguably would benefit my state. I do not think this is the appropriate way to run the Senate,” he said.

But McConnell, like other new earmark opponents, stopped short of asking for his projects to be removed from the bill.
