Note that these are 15 year-olds. They are not doing much real science yet - e.g. physics and chemistry - which requires a solid math background. The math scores tell you exactly where our expensively institutionalized government school students would score if a test like this were given to 18 year-olds. Oh....wait...that was done under the TIMSS a few years ago and guess what? The scores tracked the math scores.

Another tidbit for our conservative government school welfare queens - our best 8th graders are performing at the level of the lowest performing 6th graders in Singapore. This tracks testimony before the National Board of Governors for the NAEP a few years ago in which an analyst informed the board that the “advanced” questions on the math section of the NAEP would be consdered questions of average difficulty in 5th grade in Singapore.

Government schools are child abuse.

1. Teaching Math In 1950s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit ?

2. Teaching Math In 1960s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

3. Teaching Math In 1970s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

4. Teaching Math In 1980s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

5. Teaching Math In 1990s

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it’s ok. )

6. Teaching Math In 2010

Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100. El costo de la producciones es $80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho?

[Someone in the UK told me that African (not African-American, but AFRICAN) students in the UK do better on average than native UK students.

I haven’t checked, but I would assume this is true, the person who told me this is British ( and Anglo-Saxon ).]

Purely cultural, Students of African origin in the UK don’t have the “everyone owes me something” mentality they do in the USA. So it is no suprise they do much better.

RE: Reference “The Bell Curve”

The authors of that book caught hell from liberal papers like the New York Times and the Wahsington Post when the book was published.

Heck, Larry Summers ( then President of Harvard ) caught hell for just musing about the differences between male and female when he addressed the question of why there were more males enrolled in science and engineering than females.

There may be a part of this in there, but when I was in high school, we had a chinese exchange teacher teach at my school for about three years. He was here on a training visa, he taught english in China. He gave us very extensive information on how their school system works, and the main point I took away was that ‘young students’ (ie. elementary through high school) don’t do a lot of non-school activities during the school week. They attended like 8 hours of school, plus they usually spent another 1-2 hours doing at-school study and or school cleanup projects. Then they would go home and do 2-3 hours of home study. Every day. Basically, students didn’t ‘earn’ the right to ‘party’ or have social lives until they entered college. Additionally, it was very common for mothers of the students to attend classes with elementary-age students so that they could help their children with their studies.

Personally, I would love to see how homeschooled Americans placed compared to other countries.”

There is no direct data for that, but students who have been homeschooled for a few years have been shown to be on average 4 grade levels ahead of their government schooled peers. In addition, there are a few studies in other countries of homeschool students that show they out perform the average by a considerable margin (See “From the Extreme to the Mainstream”, a literature survey of homeschool research performed by Canada’s Fraser Institute)

I’d like to see the cost per student in Shanghai compared to US costs.

You know the msm won’t cover that.

I’m curious to know what the disparity would be if they compared kids in US private schools with the Chinese kids. The Chinese students would probably still score higher but I wonder by how
much.

Just out of curiosity, ‘twould be interesting to filter out home schooled youngsters and find out what those comparative scores are.

That’s actually pretty cool when you think about it.

RE: Asians = 108

Asians is such a large category.

India, China, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, etc. are Asian. I wonder which ethnic group WITHIN the category : Asian have higher or lower IQ’s on average.

Also, Jewish = 105 — Did they test Jews in Israel, or Jewish in GENERAL?

There are so many Jews scattered around the world that I don’t know how they tested this.

Another interesting question -— why no separate — Arabic category ?

RE: Caucasian = 100 — how deoes this break down ?

We have Anglo-Saxon, Slavic, Latin, Gaelic, Norse, etc.
I’m sure there are IQ differences between each of these sub-groups.

letting gifted migrant students reside in the city instead of going home

"Letting"? I'll translate the conversation into New Yorkese for you: "Sorry, but your internal passport to go back home to Mom and Dad has expired, little fella. Apply again in two months—after the test. They'll have nice new garage by then. Capice?

On the other hand, Hong Kong’s near the top of the board in almost every category but, again, not nearly as high as Shanghai. If the Chinese were going to cheat, wouldn’t they cheat across the board?

No. This test-opera is probably directed just as much at Hong Kong as it is at round-eyes in the West. Hong Kong is continually giving the central government the finger, and there is little Peking can do about it, since without Hong Kong, the money and brains pretty much disappear.

Please explain: why is comparing the PISA test results an apples and oranges exercise?

The racial/ethnic demographics are skewed in the sampling. The average IQ for ethnic Chinese is 110. The Shanghai students are likely 100% ethnic Chinese. The "American" group is going to be a mix of racial/ethnic groups. The mix has a likely "average" IQ of 100. The comparison isn't valid. Select just the racial/ethnic Chinese from the American population if you want to compare apples to apples.

Everyone in your state doesn’t take the SAT. Your state, whatever it is, like every state, has a substantial dropout rate (the average dropout rate calculated by te Manhattan Institute is between 30-35%). Consequently, a huge percentage of low performing students are not included, which skews the scores upward. I’ll bet you never thought of the average score as being inflated.

While I’ll agree as someone with more than a passing knowledge of Mainland China that the Shanghai scores are “cooked” to some degree and in reality are probably comparable to Hong Kong’s (which are quite good), it is amazing the lengths some people will go to to try to ignore obvious facts. Our government schooled students are INFERIOR to the students in other countries because for at least three generations our highly trained education professionals have embraced a leftist non-cognitive educational agenda for education that even the Communist Chinese reject.

RE: I’m curious to know what the disparity would be if they compared kids in US private schools with the Chinese kids.

I wonder if we aren’t comparing Apples and Oranges here.

For one, SHANGHAI is pretty homogenous ( greater than 90% Han Chinese ). USA is NOT homogeneous ( we have a diversity of races ). A few ethinic groups in the US could have pulled the average down.

China is not an openly immigrant country that accepts people from all over the world compared to the USA.

Neither are Japan and Korea.

Singapore ( which scored highly ) on the other hand, is a ethnically diverse country, but still 80% Chinese with the rest, mostly of Indian and Malay extraction.

The liberal papers engaged in a public tantrum over the Bell Curve, but never managed to discredit the findings. It is simply not PC to state the facts in public.
