I've never seen such a bunch of people with zero understanding of how the real world works

It's the same here (supposedly conservative area well west of DC). They buy into every class warfare slogan, socialist propaganda, and spend now, pay later that is dished out by the media. Their economic vision stretches as far as the next big screen TV or new truck.

Right here. After 21 years working at an aerospace giant, hubby and I got out in ‘05. Broke our hearts to see our once-lovely neighborhood trashed by illegals, gangs and drug-dealing. We’re now in a small Oregon coastal city. Yes, there are problems here, too, but on a much smaller scale. Unfortunately, Oregon voters just elected a liberal re-tread (John Kitzhaber) for governor.

I know CA is a beautiful state, but I don’t know how any conservative can stand to live there.

LOL, we have meetings in secret and join underground groups and reside in small pockets in conservative areas. We have very short conversations on the phone and have a set of innocent phrases to use assuming phones are tapped. Do not reply to this as you may become a target.

According to California's liberal legislators, high earning Californians can “afford” to pay more in taxes.

Sure, and they can also “afford” to move to another State.

Thanks for the incentive to move to California to be a dreamer dumbass, and less incentive to live in California and be a dreamer innovator or just plain hard worker.

Sheesh!

I wish him luck, cause once you live in California, they have a tendency to follow you with their tax bill in hand for retirement monies that you earned while living here.

... YUP, they used to do that and ... fortunately they got their hat handed to them in a court case, so they can no longer tax you out of state unless you try and live in CA for about half the year, then they come after you and the burden is on your lawyer to prove non residence. But retire elsewhere and your retirement assets are safe. One of the reasons me and my 401k are in TEXAS !! Come on down.

Hard to pick up the family farm and move it out of state.

Same thing on selling a house. We’re trapped.

Honestly, the California coast is much more cold and damp than people realize (forget Baywatch - think Deadliest Catch) - and the inland areas are like a desert. San Diego in August/September is spectacular, but given all the floods, fires, earthquakes, and landslides that go along with living in the rest of California, I’ve found the weather in the Phoenix area feels nicer to me, on average. 115 in the summer vs. 105 isn’t that much of a trade-off. :)

Last I saw the USSC had ended the practice of “source taxes”. A few years ago Utah pols were whining that they couldn’t go after people who left the State after retiring.

Any other CA escapees on this thread?

... well, am celebrating a first anniversary of the ESCAPE from LA. Took over a sales office in ‘82 and had a joint income high enough in the best year to pay over $125k in TAXES. Now have 4+ acres with pastures and fencing, a new barn and 2900 sq ft in a gated equestrian community outside of Austin TX and living expenses are about HALF of southern CA and the best part is my son had eight classes at the local high school where 7 of the teachers were MEN, and six were football coaches. The previous school in a costly LA district had only two men on campus, the principal(an awful bureaucrat) and the band teacher... definite low testosterone zone. We love Texas!

This Gold Rush pioneer family member left in 1987. Stopping at other side of the State line to squirt the phrase "C-Ya!" in the snow with gold colored "liquid"!

The majority of my family have stomped out as well... They taxed us out!

What happens in California affects ALL taxpayers.

Exactly. That is why the federal government must be dismantled; and States, or local jurisdictions, where public scrutiny can prevail, address their own problems.

There will still be taxes, and there will still be bitching and political corruption; BUT, there will be scrutiny, there will be opportunity to move, there will be a variety of solutions.

Once realized, the avarice of centralized federal control (the Left) becomes clear, ala Barack Obama, Janet Napolitano, Goldman-Sachs, the CFR, the Kelo Decision, illegal amnesty, Obamacare, Congress in general too, regardless of Party.

What happens in California affects ALL taxpayers, because the federal (and global) elitists covet the purse strings and the printing presses.

LOL! Good luck with that! I left CA in 92 and made the mistake of going to Oregon. I just left Oregon for the same reasons I left CA. I moved to TX six months ago. Smaller scale? Yeah, Oregon was just voted one of the top ten states most hostile to business. I wish you and your hubby the best of luck. :)

This is so true. I do miss the weather and the mountains. I can understand the temptation to make that kind of bargain with the devil.

Every now and then I visit old friends or relatives out there, see the hovels they live in, the deterioration of their communities (Fresno, where my wife was born and raised is a real prize) and remember why I moved my family to Texas 14 years ago. The benighted denizens of that blister on the bum of liberty need to get some learnin’ up.

I left in 1991. My family still lives there. I follow the budget crisis news and shudder. Wish my parents were having the retirement they had planned. My dad is a retired navy officer, my mom a retired teacher and they have to pay their taxes quarterly. It’s ridiculous. 80 years old and still the government keeps wanting more.

Cuba has a nice climate also

That, plus it's got the Castro regime rather than Jerry Brown.

They're still pulling that crap? I remember they tried it with military members who retired in other states, and it was killed in court.

According to my latest issue of "Forbes" it was "killed in court" for everybody some time ago.

A native Californian, I was quite content there for a long while. Then things kept getting worse and worse. I could not see raising my kids in that place.

I got out three years ago - took a big pay cut, but it was worth it.

I left in 1976. Any other CA escapees on this thread?

I grew up in Orange County, 8 miles from Laguna Beach. Attended college in the wid-west, after graduation went to work and live in Switzerland for 8 years.

Made the mistake of wanting to return to SoCal and did in late 1990. Fortunately for me I was able to join a start-up Swiss company and was able to set up a US subsidiary for them here in the Southeast in 1994. I couldn’t wait to get the hell out of California!

Still have family there. Chrissy Hind (The Pretenders) wrote a song about her native Ohio (Rush uses it for his theme music), someone should write a song about what happened to our California.

Last I heard, that was challenged & struck down.

Fireman I know was in Calif for most of his working life. Moved to Missouri.
Was being taxed by both states. He was part of a class action lawsuit, which told Calif to keep their hands off the pension money. It was declared to be ‘Taxation Without Representation” because none of those people out of state could VOTE in Calif.

IF that has been reversed , please give me details. Thanks.

It would still be taxation without representation.

You must know that Oregon, no matter how beautiful, is just below Seattle as the next liberal bastion, which follows the CA model. Although, Oregon shouldn’t morph into an economic $hithole for another few years.
