A child nutrition bill on its way to President Barack Obama — and championed by the first lady — gives the government power to limit school bake sales and other fundraisers that health advocates say sometimes replace wholesome meals in the lunchroom.
Republicans, notably Sarah Palin, and public school organizations decry the bill as an unnecessary intrusion on a common practice often used to raise money.
“This could be a real train wreck for school districts,” Lucy Gettman of the National School Boards Association said Friday, a day after the House cleared the bill. “The federal government should not be in the business of regulating this kind of activity at the local level.”
You know it’s bad when even the Associated Press is starting to sound like Charlton Heston with an oven mitt: Don’t Touch My Brownies!
Naturally, where there’s a call for more regulation, there will be the inevitable call for more regulators. This law will no doubt “save or create” countless “Brownie Law Compliance Officer” union jobs.

Absolutely. Also, use this opportunity to teach the liberals at the schools and the PTA that the DEMOCRATS are doing this. Try finding a way to buy band uniforms, playground equipment etc... now. Just a thought.
I don’t understand the linkage to lunch programs at schools. The object of bake sales is to sell and raise money for the schools. I’ve never seen the goods that are sold turned around and served in school cafeterias. Or am I just being simple (minded) again?
The bake sales at my daughter’s elementary school have already been impacted by the nut allergy people. I call them the nutzis, resulting in looks of reproach from my dw. Now the high and mighty government wants to get their nose in it? Damned bureaucratic busybodies.

The big winner will be those groups that make money off the sales of magazine subscriptions....the ones where the kids grades are affected becuase they did not sell X amount of magazine subscriptions....the ones where you pay but never receive the magazines.

I solve this by dropping off some boxes of Ghiridelli brownie mix. Parents could buy it from the bake sale and make it when they wanted. And if they didn’t want to eat something then, it’s still good.
Worse, that's the rule if the school has a PTA. If it has a PA (Parent's Association), no bake sales before 6pm. Seriously.
Meanwhile, the kids in my school (and others) used to walk around with those fundraising candy boxes to pay for senior dues or sports trips or whathaveyou. I didn't like the mixed message (yeah, you can sell it and you can buy it but don't you eat it in my classroom and leave crumbs and garbage) but I didn't like Klein's answer to it, either.
