ROME – A speeding car plowed head-on into a group of cyclists in southern Italy on Sunday morning, killing eight of them, officials said. The driver had been smoking marijuana, police said.

Bent, mangled bikes were strewn about the scene, and the sheet-draped corpses dotted the two-lane road near Lamezia Terme, in the Calabrian "toe" of boot-shaped Italy where the accident occurred.

In addition to the eight cyclists killed, four people were injured, said Gianluca Gioia, a spokesman for ANAS, the agency that runs Italy's state roads and highways. Police confirmed the toll.

Colorado is now dealing with the issue of how soon after smoking pot a person should be allowed to drive a car.

Unintended consequences.....of course not. They wanted the money, knew the risks, but didn’t give a damn about the rest of the citizens.

Frankly, my dear, I don’t want my school bus driver smoking pot.

Perspicacity is indeed a problem for motorcycle riders. The cases I've worked on involving dead and injured cyclists and bikers do differ however in the types of injuries they sustain. The bikers tended to go face first into things (such as turning vehicles). The cyclists tended to be getting run over (as by large trucks).

Bikers also have two advantages over the hapless cyclists (who really should not be on the road). 1) Bikers can power away from careless motorists and 2) bikers are easier to hear. “Loud pipes save lives”.

If I get an emergency call while I’m driving on a side road, I do pull over. But not on a freeway. That’s way too dangerous! If I’m near an exit, I get off. But an emergency call is just that! An emergency. Some things have to be dealt with immediately. I am responsible for the health and safety of a couple thousand people. Water company. Things happen that could contaminate the whole water supply, and cause illness or even death. Same with Doctors, etc..

Try driving in downtown Chicago. The cyclists will go down one way streets the wrong way passing through red lights. In other words, you have to NOW look in the opposite direction no less of what you would expect when you have the green.

ARe there any lawyers out there? If a cyclist is hit in this instance is it the driver’s fault?

“...the driver...a Moroccan national, had tested positive for marijuana.” “...cyclists who were riding in the opposite direction...”

Or maybe instead reflexively pitting ourselves against anyone that causes even a moment of inconvenience, we could focus on the real problem. A driver that hurts or kills a cyclist extremly likely to also be a danger to children, pedestrians and, yes even, other drivers.

Agree. To ban cellphones is plain nonsense. There are hands free phones and other things that one can talk if they have to without holding a phone. Besides,,I don’t like that blanket metality that you BAN something cause some dope behaves in such a manner. I too carry a cell phone and it is my security and safety blanket when I am alone in the car. I do not pick it up and yak, yak, yak like some people do...even in the stores yaking to their friends about this or that and exposing the rest of us to their nonsensical chatter. Make the call stae your business and get off the phone. Especially when you are driving OR pull over to make that call. It is not the phone...it is the person using the phone and you can’t punish everyone becuase of all the dopes out there in t he world who aren’t responsible. Lord rest the souls of those bikers. They didn’t deserve that.

I’ve told the “it’s no worse than booze” crowd for years, that is no reason to increase the pollution level of the culture.

Indeed - its time to ban booze! I like your approach to things.

I'm a nanny shes a nanny wouldn't you like to be a nanny too?!

I don’t understand . . . I thought pot was a benign substance? How could something being promoted as a miracle herb result in such tragedy?

Indeed you have no concept of logic.

Booze is legal it should stay legal.

The culture does NOT benefit from expanding the pool of pollutants.

Freedom is not a suicide pact.

Repetitive mouthing of truisms is a poor debate tactic.

Heck, try playing an on-line racing game against Italian drivers. That’ll tell you everything you need to know about their driving abilities... i.e. way over rated. Now Scandinavian drivers, they can drive!

I prefer the “truisms” to liberal falsisms.

It must be effective in that you have no argument

Fallacies of false dilemma aren't particularly effective either.

Cyclists can power off the road, if they pedal fast enough, hence why they’re allowed on urban thoroughfares.

Oh, and again, they’re public roads, not highways. Which means the cage roller has to suck it up and accept cyclists as a part of traffic like they have to accept horse and buggies in rural traffic. If the cage roller doesn’t like it, the roller can buy their own plot of land and ban bikes.
